Spun Bearing

So last week I took my '04 S4 into the dealership to listen to a new noise I've acquired. It was a knocking noise and that knocking turned out to be a spun rod bearing. I was told by the master tech I need a new engine which they quoted at 20k. He did find metal shavings in my oil filter. Can I not just do a bottom end rebuild or do I really need a new/different long block?

I believe a bottom end build is not offered by Audi, (I might be wrong) due to the Alusil bores.

depends . you'll need to inspect it all . inspect the cam bearing surfaces to give you an idea of the condition of the heads.
rs4 or s4 ? we had a black rs4 with a spun bearing come in last year

It's an 04; I came over from the mk6 gti forums and I keep forgetting they group the B6 and B7s/S4 and RS4s together lol.

There's a shop here on the forum selling brand new never installed motors for $10k. Or you could just find one of the many people on here with parts cars that can sell you a short block to replace....there are many on here. I've got a spare motor in my parents garage that I still haven't into yet

(No affiliation) This person over on quattroworld is selling his motor, after swapping it out for a 2.7T. It has some miles on it, but he's had a full timing service carried out, and the price is great.
