    starter noises and eventual no-start

I am EXTREMELY tired. 3 12 hour days pulling my allroad's motor and trans for clutch job and steering rack plus a number of other miscellaneous items. I have zero desire to go look at my car right now. But when I'm ready again I'll need some help.

Installed Fidanza flywheel with clutch job, wrapped it up. Started the car and it turned and fired no problem but it seemed like when the starter disengaged it made a real high pitched winding noise. Second start it did the same.

    Then

Third start the starter won't engage and it sounds like the starter gear is grinding on the flywheel.

    What do you guys think?

    -starter/solenoid coincidentally died/got sticky?
-wrong number of teeth on the flywheel? (read something about that a while ago)
    -broken teeth somewhere?
    -other?

Along with what you think it could be, where should I start? Inspect the flywheel and starter gear teeth from under the car?

Did I mention I'm very tired? Anyone want to buy a lightly modded non-starting allroad?

It seems far fetched to me, but low battery voltage I guess can cause it so I hooked the trickle charger up and will try again when the battery is fully charged.

Sounds like overspun starter. Had very similar experience on my C4. But, obviously under different conditions. I had not just undergone clutch job and reassembly. Mine was due to age I guess. Started up and stayed engaged, starter done, overspun.

Turns out the no-start was voltage related as it fired up after charging. The starter does still overspin though, as you say Jeff. What a trashy sound :(

I'll see if maybe it's slightly out of alignment or something. But not until I have energy to even try.

In other news, love the way the clutch feels, but most of all the STEERING RACK! What an outrageous improvement in response. Also love the rev happiness of the lwfw.

Thankfully it's very brief but I'll definitely want to address it. I want people looking at my car for good reason when I start it, not because it sounds like my car is imploding.
