    NEED a short shifter.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i collected my S4 on Friday, driven it 350 miles home from Aberdeen in Scotland back to England, drives really nice my observations...

CRYING/SCREAMING/BEGGING for a short shift kit, the standard throw is almost like a transit van so this is going to be a MUST, iv done a little research and see the JHM comes with high praise?

Its lowered on H&R springs and although the ride isnt crashy it feels maybe a little "skittish/unpredictable" over bumps? Long term most likely to replace with some coilovers, any recommendations?

Someone has previously tried to add on a boot lip spoiler and colour code it in and done a terrible job so the bootlid will need repainting, its a flat colour and my bodyshop guy said he will match it no problem and at the same time have the bottom of the passenger door redone where someone has done a bad botch job of repairing a scratch/ding or whatever.

So here you should be able to make out the poor paint job on the top of the bootlid...

Here is the mark at the bottom of the passenger door that also needs sorting...

Few pictures here of the car, overall she is a really well kept motor - touch over 100k miles, has just had two new rocker gaskets done and a full service inc cambelt/waterpump etc and comes with a massive stack of previous history.

Running a full miltek system, Wagner uprated intercoolers & piping, H&R Lowering springs, B6 S4 uprated calipers/discs/pads, remapped by Celtic tuning to an estimate of about 330/340bhp.

Early and late have push down. The difference is the design not function. I'll have to check jhm website to see which one I have, but I believe it was late
    Style.

It's in a totaled vehicle that I am going to get back on the road for my GF. Surely she won't even know the difference and I can recoup some money and apply to something stupid.

Yes exactly. Should be able to figure it out without removing. Just pop off the shifter surround.

all b5 s4s will have pushdown reverse. late vs early has nothing to do with that. JHM shifter seems like one of the top choices, you'll enjoy it.

    congrats on the car

Ebay short shifter is the shifter to buy, combined with a new $20 Audi shift ball pivot cage it is solid as fuck for cheap as fuck. Was gonna buy a JHM but this is just too good. I used super lube silicone grease with PTFE. And the Audi shift ball cage is nylon mixed with PTFE so it works super well together.

Here are the B&M short throw shifter install instructions aswell as it was a bitch for me to find them. http://184.154.165.18/~devilthe/uploads/1344282160.pdf

Yea buddy that is usually how it works. This is not a high precision part like a turbo, all a shifter is is some metal with some pivots. The ebay short shifter is skookum as frig, B&M stopped producing the shifter cause ebay could do it for a fraction of the price but have the same quality.

Usually I would say steer clear of the ebay parts but MY ebay Short shifter is now on its second car I originally had it in my 97, then I installed it in my 01 as a temp short shifter until l I could afford a JHM, but it performs so well for a fraction of a price, I recommend it to all my friends and everyone over the expensive JHM.

$30!? Can the eBay SS kit be used with the stock shift knob? And does it maintain the stock height? I want my SS set up to look bone stock. At that price, I'm definitely interested

cheers for the PDF and the Ebay links guys, deffo has me wondering now if its worth the punt and save myself some £$£$ - installation looks fairly straight forward!

iv just confirmed before anyway that my car is an early, it has that white plastic strip over the shifter rod.

been bringing the car upto scratch all afternoon iron-fallout removal, clay bar etc...

No problem buddy, glad to help. $30 test to save you hundreds... Install is easy aslong as you make alignment marks for re assembly. You have a pre facelift center console :O so euro.

Probably the best $30 you could spend on the car that yields such a drastic, awesome change. Yes it is threaded the same as the stock rod at M12-1.5. Its alittle shorter then stock but barely, At that price is it not worth a gamble to save you over a hundred dollars on a JHM one?

+1 on the eBay kit. As long as the ball and cage is tight, this shifter is top notch.

Anyone who pays $200+ on the JHM kit is ignorant.

    Interesting.

I was not aware that the autobahn88 SS was a copy (clone?) of the B&M.

Can you provide the part # for the shift ball pivot cage from Audi?

    TIA

It's a socket and not a cage for those who where wondering. Top number is part number. It's 2cad cheaper at VW then Audi for the part. I paid $22cad from audi. I think this socket works for the non push down reverse only.

Don't half ass the alignment or it could cost you a transmission. AMHIK.

So you have to buy that part new from audi/vw in order to fit the EBAY short shift??? you say it only works for the non push down reverse (i have push down reverse).

No. It's literally just for peace of mind. People have done it, either reusing their factory part, or buying a new one for better shifter feel.

If I remember correctly, there's a clip or something that you either leave out, or install to delete pushdown reverse.

Honestly after driving numerous B5's with all sorts of different shifters. I still think the nicest shifter you could have is a rebuilt stock shifter with a lightly weighted knob. No one has really ever perfected the short shifters for the b5. Just my opinion though.

Don't know why so many questions marks there if your surprised or what. your essentially just rebuilding the stock shifter with a different pivot thing. If you want it to be solid as 15years of driving wore the part out, yea you buy from audi/vw. total cost less then $50 compared to $280usd+ from jhm I have no push down reverse so i know the socket fits that. I wonder if you don't install the stop on the shifter you wont have push down anymore.

Look at how its designed. Literally all you do is not press in the "step" piece on the side of the shifter shaft. This is the piece that limits stick travel under normal shifting, but when pushed down, lets you go into reverse. Its simple really...

You can see the "step" on the JHM one here: http://www.apikol.com/media/catalog/.../jhm_ss_42.jpg

On that application (or stock for that matter), you will have to grind it off. On the B&M knock off kit, you simply dont install it.
