    Electronic Parking Brake - Carista

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I'm sure this is probably a very dumb question but I'll boldly go ahead and ask it anyway

Changing brakes pads today and I've used the nifty carista app to open the rear brake.

    My question is this;

Do I have to close it with the app or, does it automatically reset once using the car again?

    Thanks

Thank you, I'll do that, just didn't want to do anything to upset the system.

    I appreciate your response.

Yes, you should close the EPB with the app (ONLY AFTER FULLY ASSEMBLING YOUR BRAKES ONTO THE CAR!!!) and then cycle them a few times using the console button. If you get any errors on the dash that don't go away after you restart the ignition, use Carista to reset them (there's a way to check and reset only your EPB faults directly from the EPB service tool screen).

Wow, so that app does a lot for for $40 plus the subscription or a one week for 10 bucks. Seems a lot cheaper than the ross tech software. Im sure it's not as detailed though but still crazy it does all that stuff.

For your reference, here's what the EPB screen in the Carista app looks like. Pretty simple :)

Lol thanks. This was done a while back, and I closed without as it turned out any need to cycle. I'm quite a fan of the capabilities of carista given the cost.

Unrelated to OPs question regarding brakes, but related regarding Carista: I also have this app and must say that I really like it.

It's not as comprehensive/capable a full-blown VAGCOM, but it will allow you to customize some pretty cool things, depending on your year, model, etc.

I like the app, too, but the pricing model is dumb. Not sure why I have to pay an additional fee when I bought the full version initially. I am hoping someone else comes out with a similar app to put pricing pressure on Carista.

I like the app as well. I contacted them regarding a few things but it seems it's my 06 A6 S-Line that's actually lacking. I was wanting the needle sweep, they said it was only possible on face lift even using vagcom.

I do see a lot less capability on our 07 A4 than the features available to the 09 A6. I did quite a few things including the needle sweep.

You DON'T have to pay anything extra if you originally bought the Pro Package. If you're having technical trouble restoring your paid functionality, please contact [email protected] and we'll assist you. Note that if you were an iOS beta tester and you made a "purchase" through the beta, that was not actually a real purchase, you weren't charged, and you don't own the Pro Package. If this is what happened, please email us anyway - we have an offer for you.

    Yup! The B8 A4 has a lot more configurability than the pre-facelift C6 A6.

This is great info, I was just researching what to do about the EPB when changing rear brake pads on my '11 Avant. So the Carista app will handle this without any issues afterward?

Thanks for the heads-up, I ordered mine on October 26 for $52.99 CDN. It's now $38.99. I was gonna return and order another, but then I have to pay shipping for the return. I have contacted them to see if I can get a price adjustment. Would save time and money.

Amazon is usually pretty good about stuff like that, but if they don't honor the new price, let me know and I'll get you a free 1-week pass for the software, which is worth about the same as the discount. Just contact us via a PM and we'll figure it out. Thanks.

I did my rear brake pads this week using the Carista app to disable the parking brake. Everything went well, but the "Brake Pads" warning is still displaying on the dash. I didn't want to reset the servie indicator because the car is also due for an oil change. Do I have to live with the brake pad warning until I service the car, or is there another way to remove it?

Maybe tey to cycle the function again. And then cycle the parking switch on and off. That work for me. Also check your brake sensors. Maybe its not on correctly.

Phil, in a lot of cases, you have to reset the fault codes in the parking brake ECU after the brake pad replacement. For that purpose, Carista has a "DIAGNOSE" button on the parking brake tool screen, from which you can check and subsequently reset your parking brake fault codes.

P.S. Sorry about the late response to your PM from last month. I've just replied and given you 2 free 1-week passes.

I've read several horror stories related to the EPB so I just want to clarify the procedure as it pertains to the Carista app:
    1) Turn ON ignition
    2) Release (Disable/turn off/disengage/etc) EPB with the Carista app
    3) Turn OFF ignition
    4) Complete rear axle work (pad/rotor/pad and rotor replacement/etc)
    5) Turn ON ignition
    6) Engage EPB with the Carista app
    7) Rear axle work is complete!

Am I missing anything? VAGCOM method recommends a battery charger since I'm assuming the ignition must remain on until the EPB is engaged, which is not the case with Carista.

    Thanks!

    The detailed procedure is:
    - turn ignition on
    - disengage parking brake with the center console button (you have to press the brake pedal for that)
    - take your foot off the brake pedal and don't touch it again until the end of the procedure
    - open EPB with Carista
    - turn ignition off
    - replace brakes; note that even though the rear calipers are "released", they will not physically push themselves open; you still have to push the pistons open manually
    - reassemble everything completely
    - turn ignition on
    - close EPB with Carista
    - at this point it's ok to press the brake pedal again and cycle the EPB on and off a couple of times with the center console button
    - use the DIAGNOSE button in Carista (on the EPB screen) to check for faults in the EPB module and reset them if there are any
    - start the engine and start driving slowly and carefully; make sure the brakes work and feel as expected
    - if you get any warning lights, check and reset EPB fault codes with Carista again

That's it. Note that those instructions are also shown inside the Carista app as you perform the procedure (albeit in slightly shorter form). Generally, you don't need a battery charger, but you do need to have a good battery. If in doubt, attach a battery charger. The ignition does NOT need to stay on while you are working on the brakes. Please let me know if you have any questions or run into issues.

Carista AP and calibrating pad thickness

Adding on to this post. The Carista App can open and close the brakes. Reading the procedure, it doesn't say anything about measuring the pad thickness or entering the number for the initial calibration. Is this necessary or does the system module calibrate the measurement by itself when you cycle it a couple times?

Is there any danger as referenced by VAG COM users of "damage to the module" if you don't do it the purest who believe everyone should have a VAG COM?

Carista can also set the pad thickness/calibration, but that's only necessary on the A8 (D3). It's not necessary on the A6 C6 (it calibrates itself), so Carista doesn't show it there.

Sorry in advance for bumping this old thread and ask a (probably) dumb question - Is it ok to drive a short distance after opening the parking brake on the Carista app? I'm dropping my car off for rear brake pad and rotor replacement at a mechanic that doesn't specialize in Audi's and wanted to see if I could just release the parking brake beforehand for service.

No! Definitely don't do that. In the best case, pressing the brake pedal will undo the effect of opening the EPB with Carista and in the worst case, you won't have enough brake pressure to actually stop the car while you're driving!

What you can do though is leave your OBD adapter in the car and instruct your mechanic to use Carista - he can just install it on his own phone and use the free trial in Carista to do the brake job.
