2016 Audi S6: Emissions Testing in PA

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I am trying to have my car inspected for State Inspection and Emissions and for some reason my car can't get tested for emissions because a certain number of readiness monitors must be active and apparently not all of them on my car are active. Does anyone have any idea how to reset them or get them active? I am not running any codes or CEL so I am not sure what to do. I am APR Stage II with the downpipes. Thanks in advance.

This is likely an issue with APR turning off the cat efficiency and rear o2 monitors. The easiest thing to do would probably be to switch to stock mode and then use rear o2 sensor spacers if necessary. I know they use high flow cats, so you may be able to get by without the spacers.

So I don't have to flash back to stock, I just need to switch to the stock program then re-test? If this is the case, when I switch to the stock program, how long before the monitors are active? Must I drive a certain amount of miles before re-testing for emissions? Thanks

Hate to say it, but you will fail emissions testing with stage 2 downpipes and software. That's why I haven't done it. The tune switches off the post cat O2 sensors, so these sensors are not read as "ready". You will fail the "readiness" part of the OBD based emissions test.

If you switch to stock mode with the downpipes in place, all your sensors will function normally, but the high flow cats will likely trigger a cat efficiency below threshold code.

The solution is to run some O2 sensor spacers which will fool the sensors. This should do the trick but is no guarantee.

I find it interesting that a 2016 car has to go thru emission testing. In CA a new care is exempt from emission testing for the first 5 years and then every 2 years starting at year 6. Hope u are able to come up with a solution with your after market down pipes.

Darn. I just placed an order for stage 2 and downpipes. In Las Vegas I will need to deal with emissions as well. Following this thread for solutions.

Massachusetts has OBD based emissions testing as part of your annual state inspection also, starting from the time you buy your car.

O2 sensor spacers are your only bet. They may work, they may not.

VVG raised this issue several times when APR first announced the downpipes and the response was radio silence. That's a pretty major annoyance.

2016 Audi S6: Emissions Testing in PA

No personal experience, but one of many that surfaced in a Google search. What's alarming is that most seem to go out of their way to say it may not work. Anyone offering downpipes needs to factor in a solution for this issue, and they better not hang their hat on that "off-road only use" bullshit. They are well aware that the vast majority of S6 or RS7 users are daily driving their cars.

So the disclaimer at the bottom of this product states that if I am running APR software, I do not need this spacer. I wonder if I just switch to stock program and re test, if it will work. I'm gonna give that a try first and see what happens. I will report back.

I think it might be of interest to the whole community here to see what happens if you run stock mode for a few days with the downpipes and report back as to what happens. CEL? Fault codes? Or is everything kosher.

So I passed emissions and averted a mini crisis. LOL.

Switching back to the stock program allows the "02 heat sensor" monitor to be ready thus alllowing the car to be tested for emissions. The "o2 sensor" monitor was still inactive but enough of the readiness monitors were ready for the test to proceed. Tested, passed, then switched back to 93 program. Piece of cake.

Could you please clarify? Did you just switch to the stock program (i.e. one of the four programs loaded by APR) and wait for the readiness to set or did you flash back to stock at the APR dealer? I assume you din't use any O2 spacers. I'm planning to get APR downpipes and APR stage 2 tune next week but don't want to find out down the road that I can't pass NJ state inspection.

I'm following this thread too! My guess is that he just flashed backed to stage 1 software (not going to APR dealer) because that stage 1 file won't have the 02 sensor coded out. It will eventually throw a cel but if you time it right you can just go back to stage 1 tune and do your emission test. Total guess on my part but I have been doing a ton of research on this as I just got my downpipes. I haven't heard of anyone using spacers and actually having success for what its worth. Tons of people will recommend them but haven't heard of anyone actually using them and avoiding a Cel.

Just had a PM from chudiddy and can confirm that he just used the APR app to select the stock file and clear all error codes. Then he drove around for a day or so until enough readiness bits passed and went to emission inspection which he passed right away.

I got the rejection today during VA emissions test. Heat Sensor and O2 Sensor not ready.
Running APR Stage 2 and downpipes. No spacers. Will try what chudiddy advised, select stock program and drive around a day.

Anyone know if you can read when these sensors are “ready” with VAGCOMM? If so, what locations?

Would like some assurance before I pull up to emissions test for the 2nd time.

If you have a friend or a willing shop, the secrete in PA is as follows: when emissions machine prompts you to plug in the OBD connector, don't. Then click continue, you will get en error that the machine doesn't sense a connection and to try again. Repeats this (3-6) times, then the machine will tell you that the OBD connector must be damaged and it will put you into manual mode, I.e ask you a series of yes/no questions like is there a check engine light, does the vehicle have a CAT. And boom you have just passed your emission test. I know this because I had a PA inspection license and I am saying it because I no longer have to work in the indistry.

There are O2 sensor spacers made now with mini cats in them. My mechanic has put them in quite a few cars and said that they work beautifully.

Just to be clear, did you just switch to the stock program with your cruise control stick or actually go to an APR dealer to flash back to stock?

I switched to stock program using APR dongle via my iPhone. Not a dealer flash back.
