Thought I would share my new subwoofer install. I hope you all like it.
The subwoofer I purchased from Walmart.com is a Pyle PLPW8D dual voice coils for $20

I purchased a 2'x4'x1/2" piece of mdf from Home Depot for around $10.Then I built, painted, and sealed the box 12"x24"x6".
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw4...w?usp=drivesdk
Then I installed the subwoofer and wired it up with 2 ohms of resistance like the original subwoofer.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw4...w?usp=drivesdk
Next I wired it into the existing subwoofer wire no amp added.

I unscrewed and switched the direction of the grocery hooks.

Then using 1" screws I held up the box in placed and screwed it to the bottom of the metal shelf.

Next I sealed and screwed on the bottom of the box.

Here are some different views of the finished product.

I did something similar initially with a JL w3 8". I also dynamated top and bottom of the metal shelf, but the sub was so strong it would flex the metal and just sounded off. It was being driven by a 5 ch JL amp. I went with a sub box instead. I just wasn't happy with the sound.

Did you vent the box? How did you determine the dimensions of the box to ensure proper wavelength reflection?

Yeah I didn't want thunderous bass because of having 2 kids back there so I opted to go without an additional amp.

No the box is sealed according to the speaker instructions it needed to be .88 cu ft and the inside dimensions are 11"x 23"x 6" which is .878 as close as possible without going into any fractions of inches. Lol

All that work for a $20 driver from walmart. Jeez man. I would say now that you have done it once, do it all over again with the correct hardware and dress it up a bit more. There is also a ton of room behind the carpet on either side of the trunk to build boxes..

I kind of do audio for a living (residential and commercial) so my audi had to get some better sound. No kids either, but I was always after sound quality vs. loudness.

It sounds really good. Way better than the free air sub that was there from the factory.
