Here we go .. another oil question. With a twist ..

hey Guys .. just trying to get a general idea of what to expect. Regardless of manufacturers claims and suggestions I change my oil every 5K km ( so that would be about 3k miles for you guys ). What do you guys generally see ? is the oil Black as the ace of spades by this point ? , just starting to turn ? or the usual brown colour ?

The reason I ask is when I bough this car I immediately took it for an oil change ( showed 35K since last ) I sat and watched the guy do it . I drove it for a max of 20 miles than parked it till spring ( bought it in February ) after the most recent work and said 20 miles I changed the oil again and I tell you it looked like it had 30,000 on it. absolutely black again . I couldn't believe it. I thought u oh are the rings shot ? as this is usually a sign of combustion passed the rings when this happened so fast.

Well my son has been driving the car for about 300km so far since repairs and I checked the oil last night . level is bang on and oil is clean as a whistle so good news. I think this car maintenance was severely lacking.

Kind of made me wonder and thought I would ask ..

Oil will get black within a couple miles of driving. But..... maybe the oil control rings are shot if youre burning oil. How much oil does your car burn?

And you could change the oil every day if you wanted to. 5k miles is good interval, but if you want to extend that interval, get your oil tested at blackstone.

Get a UOA, as there is no human known that can test oil visually....

Black doesn't mean anything, just means it's doing it's job. Move on with life, or start some UOA samples.

I was surprised as well with the b7 2.0t. Few km, like 100-150km and the oil is going black. 500km and it's dark black.

My previous car, like the maxima, N/A engine, and the oil is caramel until 3000-3500 km and dark black around 8000km.

My guess is heat and low volume VS the wear that engine can bring to the oil .
I'm using liquimoly (gas/diesel approved) , and every 2 oil change, I do a engine oil flush.

(btw, it's almost like this with the b8 a5 with castrol)

I have found through two oil chances that after 5k kms I start to burn oil like nothing else. But as soon as I do a change I'm not burning anything (maybe 0.25L / 1000km tops). After that it just shoots up to 1L/1000km or more.

It'll turn black again. Direct injection.

too early to tell if im burning any . I had never though of the direct injection contributing to this as this is my first DFI car.

im not overly concerned , just more curious.
