How to check oil readout with hood open.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just figured this out by accident. (I think think this is how it works)

    Open hood.

Push key in to on position without touching any pedals.

Push down gas pedal for 5 seconds.

    Let gas pedal up.

Oil level shows in info display.

At least in my car, the other readout doesn't give a reading if you open the hood, and takes a certain number of miles to do so, after the hood is shut.

I think so. I was at 1/2 full and added some oil before running the car at idle for a few minutes

Totally awesome, I just checked it out. Actually, I don't think you need to hold the gas pedal down... it seems to show it anyway...

i bought a genuine oil dipstick, pulled off the cap (with the car turned off to avoid crappy idle) central right by the hood latch slid it in and was able to get an accurate manual reading permanently. https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B8_A4....0T/ES2662893/. i bought this before i got my consumption testing done, totally worked. sorry guys if i am abit off topic here.

Dipstick! What a novel idea. I've yet to buy one, but really should.

The key to getting the MMI read out is that the car has to be at full operating temp before it will read out, even with the hood open it will still work and update instantly.

For instance my car like yours @blbroo, burns oil. If I just started the car or turn the ignition on I get no read out. But if I let the car get up to operating temp go to check the oil level after shutting the car off and just turning the ignition back on, wait a minute or two, it will display. Say I'm half a quart low, I can add some to the car and the MMI will update as I add even. And my car is an 09 so it's not like I have some jazzy new feature or something. Lol

But as far as the read out on the dis I have never figured that one out, pretty neat I'll have to try it!

I imagine this eureka moment was a lot like mine when i realized how to set and activate my auto tilting side mirrors I didn't know I had.. The previous owner apparently had them set to not move.. For about 8 months of ownership I just assumed, then one day after adjusting for reverse. Voila.... WTF?!?

Tried this and it didn't show up on the mmi display or instrument display. Is there a certain setting needed for this to work? Cars a 2011 A5 2.0t.
