wipers start out by heading in wrong direction.

Previous owner stated he played with the wipers and could not figure out the right spot to put them in . Why became obvious very quickly.
The wipers " park " well above the bottom of the windshield. When you start the wipers they head down first in to what I would call the " park position then back up . . This is not a matter of just popping the wipers off and moving them.

In the old days there used to be a micro switch on the gearbox you could adjust to tell it where home is but I am not convinced they are still this way . Has anyone had experience with this or tell me if I am on the right track ?

    Thanks All.

I know you said popping the arms off won't work, but the wiper transmission is designed to be self-parked at the end of the cycle. Did you first try to pop the arms off, run it a couple of cycles, turn the stalk off, and re-install th arms?

If this doesn't work, there's a DIY for taking out the transmission over on Audiforums. If yours are moving but not going into the proper park position, I don't think you need to remove the entire transmission. There's a bronze colored nut on the top of the center where the transmission arms join. Loosen this nut, run the transmission several cycles until it parks, and then tighten the nut back down. This should lock the arms in at correct the distance they need to travel in the appropriate arc.

Thanks Andy I will certainly give that a try . I popped the arms off and did a couple of tests just to see and I saw what I expected. the "spline' I will call it where the arms go on turned back a little and then turned the other way which followed the wiper scenario . I think I need to take a closer look at the area you speak of where the arms join the transmission.

Here's a good thread on it with some photos depicting the bolt I'm talking about. There's also some links to videos describing how to take the transmission out and lube it. Hopefully yours doesn't need it, but if the cars have been living in winter or wet environments, the arms can corrode and not make th full movement. Good luck trouble shooting it.
