    Brakes squeaking

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
2014 S4 EPL Stage 2 have 33k miles on it, brakes squeaking at times. No pad indicator has come on yet but wondering if its maybe time for new brakes.

If the answer is yes then should I just go ahead and upgrade all 4 rotors and pads to something else? I don't track with the car really just a daily that I push hard whenever I can get away with it.

    Thanks!

The OEM brakes get noisey after 50% wear or if it gets cold. You can visually inspect the pads as well to see if you have enough pad material left on all 4 corners. If it's really bothering you, get some Akebono brake pads and call it a day, otherwise just use up the OEM brake pads and then replace them with the Akebonos when the brake light comes on.

Welcome to the club, get used to the sqeaking.... - that's the response I got from AoA. They acknowledged the defect in material and claim they are actively working on remedying the problem, but it's still a wear and tear item, and so they basically blew me off...

That's why I'm going swap my pads to stop techs, even though there's plenty of pad life left on my stock ones. I just can't take the sqeaking anymore. It's embarrassing.

I complained at my 25k maintenance and got the same answer. It is embarrassing I agree so I would rather just go ahead and replace them at this point.

Is there any reason to get new rotors as well or just the pads? Also I am assuming everyone is getting ceramic pads at this point right?

I've been told that squeaking is from the pads, not the rotors, so new pads, 'should' correct the problem.

Sorry main point was how long do the rotors last? I am already at 33k miles. I dont want to do the pads and then need new rotors in 5k miles.

the rotors probably have enough thickness so the could be machined. However German Car companies such as Audi & BMW insist you replace rotors every time you replace pads. Maybe an indy would just turn rotors the first replacement cycle

It is hard to tell without knowing your driving style and commute. An indie VW/Audi shop will probably check them out for free if you are not the DIY type.

I think I will just replace the rotors, pads at the same time. I have an indy shop that will do the install since I dont want to do it myself.

What do people recommend rotor/pad wise.

There is a minimum thickness on the stock rotors....if the current thickness is close to the min number, get new rotors else if they have enough life left, you can just get your stock ones resurfaced.

19k miles on my 2014 S4 and sometimes the squeal is unbearable. Audi told me there is no TSB on it and they'd charge me $350 to relube the brakes. Yeah, no thanks.

Looks like you have all the pads/rotors there.
I also replaced the caliper bolts and carrier bolts, but many have done brakes without doing so. I assume you have a Vag-com cable or Carista app for rears?

I was planning on taking the parts to an indy shop and have them do it. Last time I did brakes was when I was in high school 1995 and they were drum brakes.

I like the idea of replacing the bolts as well. How many bolts do I need?

You (and everyone else with squeaky brakes that have some miles on them) may be able to fix it without any new parts. The bevel on the stock pads is at low angle and depth that, after a certain wear, will squeak. You can chamfer (SP?) Your current pads on the leading edge or the side if your rotor has a lip.

Best link I could find at the moment.

That might work. They did that on my 2010 and it did help. BUT, Audi actually admits that the squeal is normal and the result of the brake pad compound. I replaced my stock pads with Stoptech ceramic pads and the squeal is gone. PLUS, I no longer have the ugly black brake dust. FYI, any ceramic pads will work. Best mod I ever did on my S4. Kick myself for not doing it earlier.

If you use the right tactics they can be replaced by AOA vs Dealership as a goodwill gesture. Mine were replaced free at 15k miles due to freight train brakes. Used a video recording and the fact that there was >3mm pad left as the reason it was inexcusable and not within "normal" operating limits.

For those of you who were told by Audi that this is normal or whatever excuse they gave you, ask them about TSB#2027636. This TSB was created by them to solve this squeaking problem. My car had 24,372 miles when Audi of Arlington replaced front brake discs and pads on 9/24/15 to solve this problem. Free of charge! Common guys, how much did you pay for your cars and you're being told that squeaking brakes are normal! Be ready to replicate the noise when you take it to the dealer or they won't do anything.

This is not a "defect" in material, it's just that the material in the pad is semi-metallic and that's what happens. I promise if you do a handful of hard 60mph stops and get the brakes hot they won't squeal at low stops until they cool down again.

The supposed TSB that I've heard of and never acted upon, so I can't speak first hand, but have heard that they will replace the pads with a less metallic pad. Less aggressive braking performance but less noise.

It doesn't bother me personally. Your car's brakes are fine though.
