    Exclamation General Q&A

    General Information Q&A

    Q: What is the RNS-E?
A: The RNS-E is an Audi DVD based navigation system. The unit utilizes two SD card slots for MP3 playback.

Q: How do I know if this navigation will fit my car?
A: If you currently have a Symphony II head unit you will have no problem fitting the RNS-E into the console. If you have the Concert II head unit or any of the older single DIN OEM head units this operation will not be a plug and play install.

    Q: What model RNS-E should I get?
    A: 8P0 035 192 Audi A3 Europe: 8P
    8P0 035 192 A Audi A3 Europe (MY 2006, without SDS) 8P
    8P0 035 192 C Audi A3 North America (Basic, MY 2006) 8P *
    8P0 035 192 F Audi A3 Europe (MY 2006, with SDS) 8P
    8E0 035 192 C Audi A4 Europe (B6/B7) Most common
    8E0 035 192 D Audi A4 Europe (B7, MY 2006, without SDS)
    8E0 035 192 E Audi A4 North America (B7, MY 2005.5)
    8E0 035 192 F Audi A4 North America (B7, MY 2006, with SDS?) *
    8E0 035 192 J Audi A4 North America (B7, MY 2006, with SDS?) *
    8E0 035 192 H Audi A4 Europe (B7, MY 2006, with SDS)
    4B0 035 192 P Audi A6 Europe, C5 and Allroad (A4 B5 with faceplate mod)
    4B0 035 192 R Audi A6 North America, C5 and Allroad (A4 B5 with faceplate mod)
*Unconfirmed, part number and description may not be correct.

Q: Does the RNS-E play CDs?
A: Yes the navigation DVD drive will play regular or burned CDs however only when the DVD map is removed from the drive.

Q: What are SD card slots used for?
A: A Secure Digital card, or SD as they call it, is a removable media storage card which allows the user to save MP3 files and play them back through their RNS-E unit. SD cards can be purchased in a range of storage capacity from as little as 16mb to 8gb (8 thousand megabytes). Price obviously coincides with storage size.

Q: Where can I get the DVD map by NavTeq?
A: The best place to source this map disk is on eBay.com or from NavTeq directly.

Q: Can I use satellite radio with the RNS-E?
A: Yes, although all RNS-E units are satellite radio ready, to allow for it to work on the Euro RNS-E you will need to flash the unit to US spec. Reason for this is that in Europe they do not offer satellite radio services so only US RNS-E units were able to link to receivers. You will need to have the most updated receivers as well model numbers are Sirius 8E0 057 593D, XM Part No. 8E0 057 593E

Q: Does the RNS-E provide the option of a telephone?
A: To operate and integrate a telephone you will need to acquire proper Audi Motorola phone and module. Parts are available at your Audi parts dept. See below for proper part number. Phone directory is displayed directly on your RNS-E screen and allows for names, numbers, and addresses to be stored for instant connection.

Q: Can my RNS-E utilize Bluetooth technology?
A: Yes, to get a wireless Bluetooth connection between your RNS-E and your Bluetooth hardware you will need to purchase the Bluetooth plug and play wiring harness, receiver module, and microphone for phone usage.

    Audio/Video Quick Guide

Q: Since my RNS-E uses DVD based map discs, does it play DVD movies?
A: Unfortunately not, although the drive allows for DVD maps the unit will only read the dual layer map discs put out by NavTeq.

Q: How do I play a CD while the navigation is active?
A: The only way to operate a CD for playback is to use an external CD player. Audi has an OEM glove box unit which holds 6 discs at a time and connects directly to the Navigation. Both the US and European model are confirmed working with the RNS-E. The model numbers are 8E0 035 111 A and 8E0 035 111 D.

Q: Does the RNS-E allow for movies or video games to be viewed?
A: Like any monitor you can hook up an external audio/video source to the navigation system. Acting as an output source, the RNS-E will display movies or video games directly on the screen.

Q: What do I need to allow for video to be displayed?
A: An external video source such as a DVD player or video game console will be needed. Many owners prefer the Blaupunkt ME3 DVD/MP3/TV Tuner/CD player unit. This unit fits directly into your OEM glove box. Check eBay.com for prices and where to purchase. You will also need a Dietz 1470 multimedia interface. This is the link between the Navigation and the external video source.

Q: Can I watch video while driving?
A: Yes, however you will need the module which allows for video in motion. The part required is the Dietz 1280 video in motion module.

Q: Does the RNS-E allow for me to hook up an audio system?
A: Yes you go about adding speakers, subs, and amps just the same as you would with the Symphony II head unit.

    Operating Your Navigation

Q: Can I input address while car is in motion?
A: Yes, unlike BMW and other European navigation systems the RNS-E allows for destination input at any point.

Q: Can I plot a stop over while in route to my end destination?
A: Yes the RNS-E allows for stop over stations during route. You can find location on map or input destination by state>town>street.

Q: By having the RNS-E can I now view navigation instructions on the DIS (driver information system) which is located on the dashboard?
A: Yes, unlike the predecessor RNS-D CD based navigation which required the TMC module, the new RNS-E navigation allows for the DIS to show all necessary information such as; street names, directional arrows, ETA, distance to turn with countdown, and miles on current route guidance. The DIS also provides the track info, artist name and song title, and all service information which was previously available with the toggle switch.

Q: Does the navigation system show destinations such as shopping malls, gas stations, police dept. etcetera?
A: Yes the driver has the option to display any or all of the dozens of categories.

    To be continued...

Please feel free to add any input and or suggestions to this post.

I have upgraded my s/w to 0360 and do have a firmware upgrade for the unit that will allow you to operate a patched DVD on the D unit just as though it was a C unit with 0100 s/w. Prior to this advancement there was no way to operare US map DVD discs on this unit. If you do not use this update s/w you will not be able to operate the D unit with the normal patched DVD. It will however work just fine with the European disc. You will also see changes to the GUI on the screen and button functions. Great updates which I look forward to seeing on the US units.

Please understand that this not a US flash firmware upgrade but rather a s/w update to USA 2a.

Does the DVD map disc cover the entire united states? Or are there multiple discs for multiple parts of the country?

The DVD map disc covers all 50 states plus Canada. If you think just roads are packed on there remember it has restaurants, ATM machines, parks, airports, hotels... et cetera. The disc is very impressive.

Is there an easy way to disable the default warning message or will one have to do it via other methods (the name escapes me now, but the method that allows you to change factory settings via a laptop).

    Thanks in advance!

As of now there is no known way to remove the legal warning. There is hopes that we can change an index value on the firmware files that will allow us to remove that feature. Unfortunately we have not yet gotten to this point.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Too bad as it's an annoyance... but I can live with it.

" Q: Can I watch video while driving?
A: Yes, however you will need the module which allows for video in motion. The part required is the Dietz 1280 video in motion module."

If you run a GALA line from the Cluster to the RNS-E, and code it for an A6 unit, you can just put a switch on the GALA line to have video in motion.

Switching to the A6 coding has the RNS-E read the speed over GALA instead of over the CAN bus.

In other words, no need for the Dietz 1280.

(This was confirmed for the B6 S4/A4)

This is true, and was also the case for the RNS-D. I will add this to the info guide but majority of novice owners might wish to do the more plug and play operation.

I know you mentioned behind cluster but here is a shot of the ABS GALA line (vehicle speed sensor) for those interested. It is located on the B6 A4 behind the drivers left foot kick panel in a block of connectors.

Notice the dead pedal and block and color of the connector. My apologies for the close up shot however I was trying to get the pin location for another user.

So on a 2004 S4 would it be in the same place. Also wondering how do I run the Gala wire to the system, meaning which pin do I splice the wire into. It seems that "Stoodo" has a different method of running the Gala wire to the system. Then "German Driver", just wondering if it works the same way. And for the coding to the A6, is that nessacary if i run it too the ABS Gala Line?

    Stoodo
Why did you put the switch on the wire?
    Thanks

Sure is. It has been done many times. You would use the RNS-E fitted for an A6 and either trimming on the base of Nav or top of climate control would be needed to allow for proper fitment. I have couple A6 units available to those up fo the challenge. David Sarabi installed it in his B5 S4 more recently and has full ipod control as well. You would need to pick up CAN-Bus module which are easy to obtain. I can get all necessary parts.

Please do not get confused here. There is no tapping into GALA or ABS line with B6 platform cars. The RNS-E is direct plug and play. You pull the stock headunit out, plug in adapter harness place GPS antenna where you please and then plug adapter back into RNS-E and you are finished. 30 minutes install tops.

Unlike the RNS-D (CD based) where you have to tap into 12V line, GALA ABS speed sensor, and various other wires, the RNS-E sends all information through the CAN-BUS system. This is the reason the Navigation is plug and play!

umm ok looks like I will stick with my RNS-D and just wait to upgrade to the RNS-E when I get a new car so it is factory installed

Well install difficulty wouldn't be bad at all but you would need to acquire the lower climate control (which I have immediate access to) and then you will be set. Let me know if you are interested I can get you all set up. [email protected]

Very good information post, I love it.
I have just got my NAVI for my A3, and wants to install a DVD/TV tuner.

I see that you mention the Blaupunkt ME3, but I can not find it anywhere.
Not on eBay, and not where I live.

Can anyone recommend another good dvd/tv tuner for my system ?

    Thanks!

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

I apologize if this is a silly question but I couldn't find an answer:

While using the Nav function(s) are you able to listen to SAT or FM/AM or MP3s from SD cards? I know that the CD function is unavailable because the integrated DVD ROM is occupied by the Nav DVD. . . .

    Thanks!

Yes, using navigation lets you still listen to whatever is selected as audio source (radio, sat, CD in a glovebox changer, MP3 on SD, TV)

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

So, if I but a Euro spec RNS-E, what exactly do I need to make it work over here? The one I am looking at comes with the nav unit, gps antenna, and code card. If I have the symphony II system, do I need a unique wiring harness?

    Thanks very much.

You need a Symphony II to RNS-E adapter (you must specify if you have Bose, CD changer, phone kit), and an antenna adapter.

A Euro unit won't accept a US map DVD. You need to make a "special" CD-R which converts the unit to accepting a US map DVD. All the info on this is on http://www.navplus.us

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

i'm looking at retro-fitting the rns-e unit to my rs6 w/symphony ii unit.

i've got an odd question to ask.

i'm contemplating the upgrade simply to get better integration with my cell-phone by way of the blue-tooth oem kit. down-under the rns-e wil not work as a nav unit as there are no maps available. this might change over the next 12 months, but who knows?

so the question. for those who use the rns-e, is it a worthwhile upgrade for a person who cannot use nav? i.e is the bluetooth/radio/sd/ipod & car interface a good step-up from the symphony ii/dis interface?

Yowsa, hard call. I'd say it's about 50/50. Having that SD cards is great fun and ability to hook up video to the monitor. Those two options alone are selling points for many. I would say give it a shot. The units are holding amazing resale value and I'd almost be willing to buy it back from you assuming condition was that as I shipped it. I really think the unit sells it self. Give me a ring and we can discuss some options. 315.299.7126

Just get the new 2007 DVD or update to sw 0150 and the disclaimer is history.

Correcto. We also got some new features such as virtual 3D display on on/off ramps, mute button, and preset icon changed.

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

the dvd in my 06 s4 avant was defective when I purchased the car a few weeks ago. The dealer is getting me a new one but seems to be dragging their feet. Is there a way to download the info somewhere and burn my own? How much is a 2007 nav dvd ?

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

Hi, I can't find anyone else who has done what I am considering doing, which is to install a RSN-E Nav Plus unit from a 2006 a4 into a 2002 a4 (now there is a non Bose symphony II ) by trying to cut the harness wires from the 2006 and then matching them up with the wiring in 2002 a4 (which would also have to be cut or removed from the harness plugs). The reason why I am looking at this option is because I have access to a salvaged 2006 a4 with a navigation system. I was wondering therfore if there are easy to follow colorcoded diagrams of the wires in the harnesses in order to match them up between the 02 and 06 a4. I know it's crazy but I figured why not try to see if this can be done. Any help will be greately appreciated!

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

Unless you have access to the pins, plugs and tools to build the matching side for your Symphony II connector, it's just causing more trouble at the end. If you can cut the B7 connector, contact someone who has built a couple custom adapters to concert the cut end to a workign plug and play adapter. Or just get a new plug and play adapter. You will need to get the antenna adapter anyway.

    Re: General RNS-E Information Q&A

I have just ordered the antenna, as it would be a huge pain to try to pull it out, and I will probably just end up getting the harness adapter as well. thanx for the response though
