    ABS Module Recode Failure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello all so I want to preface that I have searched and searched about ABS module recoding and some of my more specific questions I cant seem to find. So the backstory is I recently purchased a stage 3 b5 s4 (K04) and one of the issues that the previous owner said the car had was that his original ABS module shit the bed. (said he didn't have the original which sucks because I would have just got it rebuilt) so he installed another ABS module into the car and was going to re-code the module to the car but he said after many attempts he couldn't get the soft coding to stick. (thought he may been doing it incorrectly because so many people do) so my brother brought over his VAG-COM and him and I tried to give it a go to no avail. every time I go to do the soft coding after the login, VCDS does communicate with the module but the soft coding always goes back to 00000. I have tried multiple workshop codes as well to see if that was the issue but still nothing. I have read in a few spots that if you do not have the correct model number ABS module that you wont be able to recode it, so I am not sure if I need a specific model number to re-code successfully. Also a note, I have tried multiple times going all the way through as well and doing the G85 sensor but since the soft coding doesn't stick I have a bunch of errors in the G85 module. So I guess my 3 main questions are below.

    1. Do I need a specific model number ABS module for my car?
    2. If the above is yes and I struggle to find the correct module can I code out the error codes for the ABS and G85?
    3. Even if I had an incorrect model number I find it hard to imagine that it is impossible to recode it, could a dealership do it?

Also I am using VCDS 11.11.2 I believe (going from memory) and the cable is not genuine Ross-Tech but since its communicating successfully I wouldn't think that would be the issue.

I wonder if he placed an abs module from a non traction control enabled vehicle on a traction controlled vehicle. Or vice versa depending on what you have.

It is very possible, unfortunately I do not have any of the details from him on where it came from. Going to try and look up the model number if I can and see if I can find out what it originally went into.

There you go at least you have the starting point. Grab the model number and post it.

Also by no means am I an expert on the subject. But thought I'd throw an idea out.

You need to have a correct ABS module for the car you're installing it in, that's true; and there was change in 2000.5 to the ABS / traction control system in the B5 S4. So there IS an early and late version I believe.
Also, you have to use the CORRECT login, which is specific to the car (engine/brakes options, drivetrain) and the module. If you do not use the correct login then it will not recode.
    You'e read this page ? : /Audi_A4_(8D)_Brake_Electronics_(Bosch_5.3_ABS/EDS/ASR/ESP)

For a 2.7 S4 the login should probably be 09495 (for a manual) w/ Hp2 brakes..? And the coding should be 04395 ? Again, for a manual.

From my experience it also helps if you do the ABS recoding AND the angle sensor calibration all at once; seems like most of the time if you don't fix the G85 error right after recoding the ABS module then it wont stay coded. So when I do it I make sure I'm in a spot (parking lot) to complete the G85 calibration at the same time. But mostly, be 100% sure that the login you're using is correct.

hey roller yeah I believe I have the late version abs module because I have traction control. I was however using the correct login and coding, which are the numbers you posted. I followed the Ross-Tech Wiki to the letter so I am pretty sure I was doing it correctly. However, like I said after I do the soft coding (before the G85) the coding should stick and then I complete by doing the G85 sensor. I cant seem to get the coding to stay. So I am thinking now that since I need a specific model ABS module that he may have put the incorrect one in and I am thinking that it may have been one that doesn't recognize the traction control which would throw the code even after I try to recode it which would most certainly not allow the coding to show up since its still receiving an traction control code from the abs module.

Just remembered, Last time I did this (and any tuning) ...I had to hook up a battery charger too. I just did this on an S6 and the coding wouldn't stick; worked PERFECT the first time when the charger was hooked up.
Small detail, and kind of strange but sometimes that's all it is.

Otherwise, clear errors in every module you can before doing it, start with ABS, Engine etc..technically it shouldn't matter, but these systems can be finicky.

Which module came in the 2001.5? Make sure you have the right module, Bosch 5.0 or 5.3, with ESP or without ESP. For example I have the 5.0 w/ESP, which cannot be rebuilt and is specific to my 2001 model.

yeah this is part of my research that I am going to do when I get the part number. Like I said the previous owner didn't tell me where it came from so Ill have to look up the part number.
