Possibly jumped timing? - Am I fvcked?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Was cruising on the freeway last night when suddenly the engine died lost power steering and check engine light pops up, was able to coast off the freeway and into a parking lot. Had it towed to my cousins shop and we just read the check engine codes.

Really sounds to us/me that it jumped timing, which I just did the timing belt about a month or so ago and it's been driving perfectly fine with no symptoms or issues.

Right now the car idles, but roughly and I do hear some ticking that wasn't present before. Not similar to rod knock though..

What are the odds the valves didn't slap the Pistons and cause damage to either?

Is it possible to jump timing and it causing absolutely no damage?

If it didn't jump timing, what else could be the issue?

    5 codes total

    P0016 - cam/crankshaft pos. Correlation sensor a - bank 1

    P0016 - cam/crankshaft pos. Correlation sensor a - bank 1

    P0300 - random/multiple cylinder misfire detected

    P0301 - cylinder 1 misfire detected

    P304 - cylinder 4 misfire detected

Gonna rip the front end off tomorrow to check the timing marks. Pretty sure I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight

I'll look into the crank position sensor, where is that located?

Drivers side of the engine block right by the oil filter housing, a gray connector. But since that is a sensor it would most likely throw a code, which you don't have.

Hate to say it, but I'd spend all my time checking out timing marks, then even the chain on the back of the head, before I looked at crank sensor. That error isn't about the crank sensor, it's saying the relationship between the camshaft and crankshaft doesn't make sense.

Yes, timing, had the same fault codes when mine jumped, however mine wouldn't run after it jumped, as it said the cams were out of position.

Possibly jumped timing? - Am I fvcked?

@pAid4 thanks man. Ya every free second I get I spend wrenching on her.

Here's a video of what she sounds like idle, if I did jump timing and bent some valves would the car even idle/start?

Maybe it is just a sensor out of wack?

Half way ripping the front end off, we'll see if timing marks are misaligned..

Sounds like diesel mode. That's what mine sounded like before I replaced my cam follower and fuel pump.

Well this is near enough its current state, just cleaning out the heads then it's going back together!

The valves don't appear to be bent, but I am replacing the ones that clashes anyway because it's such a PITA job to get apart!

nice work. So it was off timing? When you say valves clashed, you mean they actually hit but werent damaged?

Yes, exhaust valves hit the top of 3 Pistons. Can see the rings on the top of the Pistons, I replaced them just because it was so much work to get it apart for the sake of £100 it wasn't worth not doing them, because if it had caused issues after a rebuild I would be fuming!

Pistons weren't damaged though, only just nicked them.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, been really busy.

What it looked like when I pulled the top timing cover off, notice the inside of the belt worn down

    Timing belt shavings

    More, they were everywhere..

    Here is the culprit..

So there are 7 bolts holding the lower timing belt cover on, 1 of them being located on the inside of the timing cover that is accessible once the top timing cover is removed. It appears that the one single bolt on the inside, gradually backed itself out and was the cause for the wear on the timing belt. It eventually backed all the way out, dropped onto the main crank gear/pulley and caused the timing to jump. Found the bolt that backed out in two pieces..

Timing was off by 5 teeth

Purchased a new timing belt and tensioner, realigned the crank/cams, put locktite on every single damn bolt, nut that I could find and ran compression tests and got 180 - 175 - 170 - 180 with 6 cranks/revolutions per cylinder.

Had some time to drive her around today and she feels great, no loss in power or any strange noises. Still want to have a leakdown test performed but saying I dodged a bullet might be understatement of the year.

Engine gods were kind to me
