engine help: can i replace my 4.2 manual equipped engine with one from an auto?

shopping for used engines unfortunately, I came across a decent buy on an 07 salvage s4 with auto tranny (hit in rear/side), was wondering if anyone can confirm (besides alternator being different) if the auto version is compatible with my manual tranny car? I know some cars it matters and some don't, but couldn't confirm through google searching. don't want to buy the car if I cant use the engine. thanks in advance for any help - bob

I do think it's possible... there is one adaption that need to made which is a removal of a piece. Sorry I can't be specific, I'm sure others will clear you up. Good luck! I am going to be doing an engine swap at some point as well. Mine has 196k

yep from what I've heard the only difference is how it's mated to the transmission. you would just need to take off the flex plate and install a flywheel/clutch instead

I think you need to remove the flex plate for it to work

I wasn't aware of that, sorry if I gave misinformation above... Also, I forgot to mention there is a spacer that goes in between the engine and tranny for the manual (not pressed onto the crank, it sits betwen the mating surfaces kinda like a thick gasket). I'm not sure if it would be there for the auto already
