    Might need a clutch?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So after getting issues with my transmission jack fixed this week, I finally was able to pull my trans out and get started on putting a new clutch in my 1.8t. I knew before I bought this car that it needed a clutch but I didn't expect it to barley be hanging on like this

Wow, I'm no expert, but that's quite wafer thing, isn't it? How did this clutch feel while driving? I'm just wondering what this kind of a mess feels like inside the car.
Also, is that a Valeo SMF kit replacing it?

It should be a testament to Luk's durability. It drove fine until about 2800 rpms and anything over 5 psi of boost and then it would stop slipping at around 4500 rpms. That only happened once before I decided to take it easy. Once I got the transmission out and started to remove the pressure plate, I was surprised at how much play was in the whole assembly. You could push the pressure plate in and it had about 3-4 cm of travel and could rotate it about 2 teeth either direction. Never once had a rattle though.

And yes that's the Valeo SMF kit going in.

    Yup, that one is toast.

Check out rock auto for a new flywheel. LUK ones are less than $200.

That's actually where I got the Valeo clutch kit with SMF conversion. $328 shipped to my door with a coupon. Sad news is I'm a district manager for an auto parts company and RockAuto still beat my discount on the clutch kit

Mine's not slipping but it sure does chatter. It's passable if I give it a little extra gas when I let out the clutch. I don't how much longer I'll be able to nurse it along. I had already decided on a Valeo clutch. What is SMF? Something about the flywheel?

Single mass flywheel. The OEM is a dual mass flywheel.

Rock Auto has the Valeo kit for $166.79. That's a great price. No need to wait any longer. I see a new clutch in my future. Should I replace anything else while I'm in there? Do people replace the thrust bearing on Audis?

I went ahead and did the throw out bearing and pilot bearing. If you're in there you might as well. Sime guys will tell you to replace your slave cylinder when you do a clutch but I've only done that when the slave and throw out bearing are internal.

Not sure what most guys on here do but I did this job a few months ago and I replaced all the soft parts in the bell housing I could while it was apart, i.e rear main, trans input seal, pilot bearing and of course broken trans mount.

For that price I assume it is only a replacement clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing. That isn't going to work with your dual Mass flywheel. You will need the full Valeo kit that includes a single Mass flywheel. And i would recommend replacing the pivot block, spring and post at the same time.

The Valeo kit from Rock Auto includes the pressure plate, disc, an aligning tool, and something which might be a throwout bearing.

Convince me that I shouldn't stick with the original flywheel.

No need for a new flywheel if yours is ok. I wasn't aware that Valeo made a kit that worked with the Dual Mass flywheel.

If you want to stay dual mass, using Lux pressure plate kit and flywheel from Rock Auto is about $350. Given how long yours lasted it's hard to find fault with the factory type setup. With such a reasonably
Priced dual mass there is no real cost savings when converting to single mass.

I ran that setup for a year and it was very good on my stock 1.8.

For those of you who choose to do it stubbornly on the ground like I did, my advice is to turn your trans jack towards the front of the car for install. I've fought with mine for a couple of afternoons after work before spinning the jack around. 1st shot was the charm.

LOL!! I wish I had a trans jack.

I've changed mine three times with a floor jack, a strap and a board :-(

And a lot of unprintable words.....

I wish I would have spent the extra money on a better transmission jack, went with a cheap one - and I almost would have been better with just a floor jack. Actually wound up using the trans jack, with a small floor jack under the rear of the transmission. Made life much easier.

I used the Northern Tools middle of the road trans jack and it worked just like our Blackhawk post jack did when I was in the shop. Only difference was it used a chain vs a strap. It was about $170
