    what would cause this?

I was on a nice open straight empty road so I gunned it....
not for too long (couple of minutes)... hit about 250 before I let up, and coasted up to a set of light...
Once stopped at the light I could no longer change gears!
Turn off the car, and I could shift... start the car, and no shifting!
After a bit of trouble shooting I noticed that my clutch was not up all the way, and I pulled it up with my leg...
Started up the cars, and was able to shift again...
What could cause the clutch to get stock?

    thanks

I'd blame the slave cylinder for that

    And have never been happier

This is a common issue with B7 RS. Time for a clutch job unfortunately. Simply pull the pedal up during "quick" shifts if it happens again. And if you decide to take the car to a shop, don't let them grind the gear in.
Switched to Tesla and have never been happier. No more shady mechanic bills and excuses - oil top off before an oil change is normal or dealing with outdated forums that have image size limitations. And no more dealing with vendors that do not provide horsepower numbers but sell you random things by labeling them as performance parts. No more dealing with the Audi dealership and having to buy custom Audi specific tools. Wow. I can't believe I lived through all of this. Money pit.

Very common with all Audi (at least with B5 A4). Slave cylinder going out. It is cheap, fix it quick

It's the self adjusting pressure plate, it's very well known on the B7 RS4. On hard runs I have to pull the pedal up a bit with my toe. FWIW, I have a solid metal slave and line, so it's not the slave acting up, it's the pressure plate.

I've been noticing that I'm beginning to get a bit of the "sticky-clutch syndrome" after stints at WOT. It's not quite at the point where the pedal remains stuck to the floor, but definitely feeling a bit "sticky" on the way back up. I had thought this was the slave cylinder as well, but good to know that it's actually the pressure plate.

Is this something that requires a new pressure plate to be installed? Or is it just a matter of giving the plate a "tune up", so to speak?

Means your pressure plate is on its way out. Mine was sticking for a bit and eventually kicked me out of gear on a hard shift so I decided to upgrade clutch/flywheel/pressure plate. My mech said the pressure plate was in a pretty bad shape when he removed it - ie would have failed in due time. Go JHM R series if you're gonna drop the tranny anyways!!

    Interesting!

I did a fair bit of searching regarding the "sticky clutch" and came with this as the best verdict:

I had this same issue with my car. Clutch pedal sticking down particulary when changing down from high revs/heeling & toeing etc.

First happened at a trackday at Spa last year and then did it fairly regularly after that.

I had the modified clutch pipe fitted at my dealer as a first port of call, but this didn't make any difference. They then suggested changing the slave cylinder and then master cylinder if that didn't work. I didn't go ahead with this as I wasn't convinced that was it.

I then spoke to Ben at Revo, who straight away said that it was a guide sleeve on the input shaft. Audi have produced a modified part, so they know there is a problem, but there is no recall campaign or goodwill!

Unfortunately, replacing this part necessitates the removal of the gearbox, so I had a new OEM Sachs clutch fitted at the same time. The flywheel was fine (only 30k miles), so didn't change that.

    Problem solved!

Now that you mention the pressure plate I'm a bit in doubt. Did you get the chance to change the pressure plate or get the info from anybody with a sticky clutch that did this change and the issue was gone.

Ps: Sticky clutch syndrome also here, but not as much after a couple proper clutch bleedings.

The Spec clutch is also definitely one to consider. I've tried 3 different aftermarket setups and this one has been the most stocklike feel and has lastest the longest of them all so far. I have about 30k miles on it. Also happens to be one of the cheaper options out there.
