problem with coolant system after flush

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay, so I am about 2 weeks out from a coolant flush, which seems to have caused - neither the radiator/ac fans to work, there is a code for engine temp, and the CEL is now on.

    Address 01: Engine Labels: 06B-909-518-AMB.lbl

    3 Faults Found:

    P1660 - 002 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
16825 - EVAP Emission Control Sys
    P0441 - 002 - Incorrect Flow - MIL ON
19537 - Engine Temperature too Low
    P3081 - 008 - - Intermittent
    Readiness: 0000 0000

(I was going to post the whole Vag reading, but it took up so much space and I could not figure out how to put it into one of those handy little windows that others use)

In the meantime I have changed the green (4 pin) temp. sensor, and the black (2 pin) temp. sensor and the thermostat, thinking that these would help with the engine temp. (Also water pump was changed about a month and a half ago with the timing belt) I also replaced the 219 relay for the fans. All to no avail.

The temp. gauge jumps around from 1/4 to 1/2 depending on driving conditions, and the fans never come on. I have thought about changing the fan control module, but I cannot understand how this would help with the engine temperature fluctuations.

    Any advice? Thanks

ps. I am in the process of reading/understanding past posts that reference using Vag tool to read blocks 130-132.

Monitoring blocks 130 and 131 will definitely help you pinpoint the issue. Meanwhile I'm going to do a little speculation here. I suspect your fans aren't coming on because of a faulty fan control module. Or a bad wire to the fan control module.

Whenever the ECM detects a problem with the cooling system the default is to run the fans on high and apply full power to the thermostat heater. If your fan control module isn't working properly the fans won't come on but the ECM can still apply power to the thermostat heater. That could explain the reason for the dip in coolant temperature.

If this is occurring you will be able to see it by monitoring the aforementioned blocks. The heater duty cycle will stay high even when the coolant temperatures do not warrant the reduction thus forcing the thermostat to stay open when it should be closed.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice....To be sure it was not the fans I bypassed the control module and the fans powered up no problem. Just ordered the control module....What else could I have spent 300 dollars on...hmmmm. Anyway, should be here Sat. will let you know how it goes.

These cars never cease to amaze me you do some sort of maintenance and it results in a problem that is seemingly unrelated to what you just did. How can flushing the coolant cause a problem with the fan control module?

one-ring members...noobs....Just wait buddy, you're in for a treat! LoL

It took me about 2 years to finally solve my coolant problems. Chasing leaks from one problem to another. Wound up replacing the entire coolant system: heater core, thermostats, rear flanges, head gasket, reservoirs, water pumps, hoses. Even had to endure an Indiana winter with no heat due to coolant issues. Nothing pisses you off more than seeing your car "overheat" in 10 deg weather.

Thankfully I had OldGuy to help guide me through the darkness. [thumbsup]

Went through 1 winter exactly like that here in Toronto....it was brutal. Didn't have heat, no idea how I made it out alive.

Hahahah, it would basically be everyone in this section to be honest

Okay, sorry about the late response....fan control module did not solve fluctuations in temp. gauge, nor run the fans. I am thinking I will order both the 2 and 4 pin temp. sensors as they are relatively cheap...maybe one of the new ones is malfunctioning.

Also, would a small leak in the system somewhere cause this problem?...the coolant line into the turbo is leaking...very very minimally, but I am sure it is.

Lastly, I am in Milan right now...two things...why so many avants? And I usually spot at least one b8 s-line a6, s6 or rs6 avant daily...wow they are impressive.

Because Italians (and other Europeans,) appreciate a superior good looking car design and they like the utility Avants offer.

Now that you've replaced the FCM have you reset your ECM?

Could you please elaborate. By reset do you mean clear the codes? I did not.

Correct. Clear all the codes. Some codes that cause the ECM to react will continue on until cleared. Even if the source of the code has been corrected.

I have to ask a question here...

    Method...

Who did the system flush? What method was used? What was removed to drain and flush? Chemicals?

Need more info the better troubleshoot.

Also "air" in the system is a huge issue if not properly bleed.

Okay, did not reset ECM...will do asap.

How: Drained coolant from lower driver's side plug, replaced plug, pulled upper house on firewall (has the small hole) filled reservoir with distilled water, replaced hose, warmed up car, repeat x 3, last refill was g13 coolant.

Have attempted to purge air by removing radiator cap upon warm up...., but do not discount the possibility...any tips?

    Thermostat from ECS.

okay so cleared ecu codes today....and then installed new temp sensors (both 2 and 4 pin) still no fans, still jumpy thermostat. I ran the 130 and 131 here is what they looked like.

    130

    73 - engine outlet temp.
    72 - radiator outlet temp.
    96.5 - thermometer duty cycle

    131

    75 - engine outlet (actual)
    101 - engine outlet (spec.)
    75 - radiator outlet (spec.)
    96.5 - thermostat duty cycle

ran the car around for a while thought I would post the codes...new problem of EVAP just came up...super.

The large driver's side engine cooling fan will not run if the coolant temp never gets hotter than 1/2 on the temp gauge especially with a DTC for low coolant temp. The cooling fan is controlled by the ECU based on the temperature at the black radiator outlet temp sensor. The right side fan is for the A/C condenser and is not associated with engine cooling.

The DTC with MIL light ON is from a fault with the EVAP emission control system, "Incorrect Flow". Either the N80 solenoid orifice is plugged or an EVAP hose is disconnected.

"Intermittent" DTCs are not actually occuring when the ECU was last scanned for faults.

cool, thanks for all the input.

I did solve the EVAP (I think)...had recently changed check valves and accidentally placed one in the wrong direction.

As per the radiator fans...just had the temp gauge up to 1/2 (temp is accurate and does not jump while parked and idling), but still no fans, even when I put the A/C on full neither runs. I called the shop today and am going to take it in...

To reiterate...neither the coolant or AC fans were coming on...(fan control module was replaced, both temp. sensors...thermostat and water pump recently too)

The problem turned out to be part number 8A0 937 530, which is an under the dash 60amp fuse.

    [IMG][/IMG]

fans are back on, and the coolant system seems to be back to normal.
