    S5 buyback question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking at a 2008 S5 to replace my 2008 e93 335 as a third car. Love the 335 but my wife doesn't want me driving it with the airbag recall. Who am I to argue with getting a new car?! Plus, I have always wanted a v8 Audi. Anyway, trying to do this on a budget as it is a third car after all. The S5 I am looking at has around 90k but was bought back by Audi 500 miles ago and then sold at auction. The car was under the CPO warranty at the time.

So to my question, with a buyback, does Audi fix the car before auctioning it? At 90k on 4.2 I can only think of one reason for a buyback - engine Kaboomy. Presumably Audi fixed and I am getting a new or at least used motor in decent shape. Also, would what's left of the CPO transfer?

It's an otherwise a clean California car. Would you be hesitant to buy for around 15.5? Thanks for your thoughts.

Very interesting scenario there. I was almost in a similar boat but car was priced way less and needed a starter and engine mounts.

Most likely the engine itself is fine, I would worry about the clutch, transmission, engine mounts, starter, etc. Is the title clean?

I'd have a PPO done no matter what, it will be money well spent.

Thanks for the feedback. Not as worried about the small stuff, I have a lift and all the good stuff that goes with it. Plus, I owned a 335 after all! Is the starter a known failure point and difficult to replace? Title is branded as dealer buyback. You think the asking price is too high? It is the best priced S5 I have seen by far, regardless of issues. I'm thinking if I can get the s5 and trade in my clean and mechanically perfect 115k mile 335 convertible for 2k I will do it. It's been in the lot for 2 months and it's the start of summer here so my car would go quickly.

That price is too high for branded title. I paid way less from a private party and the title is clean.

Yes starter requires engine removal at Audi dealer, but I was able to do it without(see my thread in V8 section).

I would walk away from a branded title, resale value is bad and being a buyback it might be a lemon. I would pass on that, something else will come along I'm sure.

    S5 buyback question

Has anyone even blown up a 4.2 S5 yet lol? I've seen some 3.0T's fail I "think". At least over in the S4 B8 section.

I have a 2010 with 75k, my friend has a 2008 with now over 100k, forget exactly the miles. He's had it since about 30k, right at 100k he replaced the thermostat which is fairly common around the 100k mark. As well as he got a small crack in his coolant res tank, another relatively easy fix. Other than that it's cherry.

Branded title would be a tricky one if you wanted to move on from it in the near future. But if you plan to keep it for a while $15.5 is a decent price providing the car is good mechanically.

I believe I paid $26,000 for my 2010 S5 last year with 65k miles from the dealer.

I was more worried about the timing chain and cylinder wall scoring I have seen in reference to the s4 v8. Is that not an s5 issue?

That was more of a problem with the B6 & B7 4.2. There has been revisions to the chain & tensioner.

Why would you think they'd only offer you 2K for your 335 vert @ 116K miles?!

Are 335's worth that little now?

I haven't read everyone's responses, however, if it hasn't been mentioned, know that Audi's CPO is not transferable from a private owner to another.

EDIT: never mind, just noticed you're buying from a dealer...they should be able to honor the CPO for you, specially with the history of the car.

I'm hoping he means trading in that car +2k to get the S5. They're certainly worth more than 2k right now. Last I checked, 2008's coupes around 120k miles were going for at least $12.5k

It was a buy back then auctioned. Title is branded thus it is Highly unlikely to have the warentee any longer. BTW anytime a car is sold to a dealer it looses the warentee. Only time to transfer is when it is a direct sale from owner to new owner.

Exactly. Private party would be 14k optimistically. I meant 2k delta with all fees. Should have been clearer. However, the responses have me a little worried that might be overpaying and just about the car in general. I don't want a pariah I can't sell in a year should I so choose.

Thanks, good to know. So the S5 v8 is pretty solid? I searched S5 specific and didn't come up with much.

Pretty much what I figured. The bigger question is whether Audi fixed it in the three months between buy back and auction.

Then definitely have a PPI to ensure you are not getting screwed over...fwiw, the car in good shape is a blast to own. One of the very few Audi's I would consider owning actually.

    S5 buyback question

Love mine, amazing how I still get looks & compliments all the time on my 2010. In perspective it's a 6 year old car, doesn't quite feel it oddly. The B8 interior is MILES better than your current 335i. Nice & roomy in the front for a coupe, back seats aren't too shabby. My 12 year old fits back there, so does Mom if we toss he back there sometimes haha.

Drive mine year round in PA cuts through ANY weather without hesitation. And lastly that high rev'ing V8, a dying breed hey are of the N/A flavor. Toss a AWE exhaust on it & it will pur & turn heads if you so choose ;)

Pretty decent on gas for a 355hp V8. If my fiancé drives it she can get like 17mpg CITY, amazing lol. Me a little less for sure haha. I believe they can get about 24mpg highway I never keep track though. Seems better on gas compared to my last DD which was a Hummer H3 with a high output "5 cylinder".

I drive like 90% city 10% highway and get about 235-250 miles a tank give or tank occasional Italian Tuneups. If your'e mostly highway you can break low 300 miles. 16.5 gallon tank size I think it has.

Wait, did you just refer to the V8 on the s5 as a "high revving" V8? :)

    7000-7200rpm isn't high rev'ing?
That's right on par with the C63 6.3L. What's high rev'ing than lol?

I know some of the M3's are like 8000, but compared to the 3.0T, the B8 S5 is big rev'ing lol ;)

Anything to me seems "low" rev'ing anyway compared to my Zx-10R with a 13,000rpm redline

I guess after having owned 2 e90 M3's with 8400 rpm from factory (no tune), 7k rpm seems a bit depressing :P

Haha makes sense, actually i didn't realize they were so high rev'ing, pretty impressive. Other than the RWD vs AWD. How would a 2008 M3 "4 door" make as a DD? Everyone always says they aren't as good as say a C63 or a S5 as a DD, they don't like to be driven "normal".

There was a 2008 with only 39k miles for $32,900. I got "tempted" to go look at it. But I really love my S5 even as a DD. Especially the interior. Does the job. Plus I owe WAY less on it compared to what that M3 would end up costing me.

The M3 is on its own league, specially when compared to the c63 or the s5. The Benz is a quick bubble on wheels, not much feel and it isolates the driver from the feel of the road. The s5 is the most tame of the three, and a decent compromise. Frankly, I prefer the M3 and it is rather easy to drive daily, no issues there. After owning two in a row I decided to give the Audi a shot as I tend to get bored easily.

Makes sense. See where I live there isn't a lot of room with traffic to push the car unless I get on the highway which isn't too often. So the package of the S5 having the nice interior. AWD, V8, & looks just fit good for me. I can still pull up to lights with the V8 grumbling & still have a car that can perform in any weather. Where it lacks in raw power it does make up for in refinement.

I looked at some w204 c63's but unless you get the 2012 with the interior revision the interior is a MAJOR let down. Especially now owning a B8 S5 with its interior. The 2008-2011 c63 literally has almost the same interior as a C-series just a tad spiffed up. Big letdown with a car & it's original MSRP. They do kind of blend among other C series look wise unless your a car buff, at least the non face lift. I always think I see a C63 in the distance but turns out it's just a C300/C350 lol.
