Question Door Trouble Opening and Closing-Something Wrong with Latching Mechanism

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I try to open my door it usually takes 2 pulls to get the door open. The problem persists only on the drivers door. I know it takes two pulls to open the door from the inside when the door is locked. This happens on the inside door handle and outside door handle. Today I went to grab some lunch and when I got back to work the door would not open at all from the inside or outside. Luckily I locked and unlocked the car with the key fob and the door finally opened up. I'd like to get this fixed before the door doesn't open at all and I'm stuck trying to figure that out. I'd rather not climb in and out of the window/passenger door. I've climbed through the window before and it is no easy task.

It's the door latch. They go bad one way or another. Could be striker alignment..but not likely. Do this: open door and use a round screwdriver shaft to act as the door striker and click it into the latch, to mimic closing the door. Repeat this a few times and alternate using the interior handle vs. the exterior handle to see if one causes the latch to open better / worse than the other.
One problem is that the little finger that moves around in the door latch is coated in rubber/plastic and that starts to wear out and can catch and cause the latch to stick.
A good working door latch will click open smoothly, rapidly and on the 1st try.
You can get a NEW latch out of China off Ebay for around $35; I've bought a few and have no complaints yet. And last time I bought a PAIR for $49 and they showed up in 4 days. They work great. But, one way or another it's the latch. You can spend a day fiddling with it and fix it, and the same problem will come back. Just replace it.

Here's a pair that I bought for my S6, but honestly I think they're exactly the same part for an A4. Only difference I know of is the little rod that pops up/down for seeing if your door is locked, which the A4 doesn't have. They were maybe $10 cheaper when I bought them.

I know, shipping from china! Seriously showed up in less than ONE WEEK. I'd just buy a new one; I've bought used ones before and usually they are okay, but those new China ones seem great and too cheap to pass up.

i have the same problem. its to the point where i have to hit the door near the lock/handle after i "unlock it" with my key to get in. i tried messing with the striker and all that and got nothing. ive just dealt with it, but its kinda embarassing at this point. i even disabled auto lock at speed so i dont get stuck in my car lol. may try the fix above.

The double pull needed to open the door is a safety feature set by the coding value of the central comfort module. If you change the coding of the module the double pull will stop and only a single pull needed to open the door when it's unlocked.

+08192 = No Safe-Function. turns off safe function. Add 08192 to the current module coding value.

That's pretty cool. I had no idea you could code that feature out.
