I started taking the trans out for a clutch job and accidentally took the motor out. So why not go stage 3?

The deciding factor was a motor support bar and trans jack was the same price as a crane hoist, but I knew I probably wouldn't use the trans jack and support bar nearly as much as the hoist. And that I would need a hoist eventually anyway.

So the motor isn't completely out but everything is disconnected and tomorrow it's getting pulled.

This is totally open for thoughts and comments and personal experience and advice. This is my first engine pull, first time touching turbos, first time for a lot of stuff here so I welcome your experience! Let's get on with the details.

    _____________________

I know there is some heated debate about turbos and there's some strong opinions. I have a line on used BW K04s, they are/have been installed in a stage 2 A6 since new, 15k miles on them. They're coming with SSAC inlets and DPs. Not stoked about that since I would probably buy something better quality if they didn't come with any. Thoughts about this decision to go used given the details for this particular pair of snails?

Clutch assembly is B5 RS 4 clutch, PP, TOB and fidanza FW I got new pilot bearing and hardware.

I might do ICs at the same time, but I already wasn't planning on pulling the motor so the budget is being pulled out of thin air and all the motor out pertinent stuff is much more important. Thinking SRM if I do.

I know I can look it up, and I will later, but what are the other full stage 3 bits required? Fuel pump, injectors MAF? FPR? I have 710ns and pretty new tbb. (can I pressure test with the engine out?) Not sure what pump or injectors yet, but I've been told to not get any injectors that have been modified.

Here's the list of what's happening with the engine out, plus other things while it's out of commission and stuff is removed and then stuff that's getting done once bolted back up:
-full engine reseal except crank seals
-all fluids flushed or drain & fill, except brake fluid
    -all diff seals
    -valve covers powdercoated
    -all vacuum lines replaced
-RS 6 steering rack and solid TREs (I just bought a brand new rack (not remanufactured, not new old stock, I kid you not)
-track torque, motor and trans mounts
    -spark plugs
-new maf whether I need a different one or just replace the old
-clean the hell out of it
-paint all the under bits like the trans and stuff and Y pipe to freshen it up

What else am I missing? I should probably do the aux coolant pump, right? What else?

I have too much to say on this. Just text me when you get a chance.

Rs4 clutch is good for middle of the road stage 3 power but isn't a clutch to launch on.

Ttv flywheel is a better option as fidazna has a welded on tone ring if memory serves. Julex exploded a trans when that weld broke. Not to say you won't be fine, but a ttv is a better option.

For your motor pull, buy an engine leveler and a 4th lift mount from the junkyard. Don't have a pic but it's the drivers front lift point. You buy a spare and bolt it in where the power steering line bolts in on the opposite corner. This gives you a 4th mounting point and makes engine remove a breeze. Also you might want to remove your trans mounts from your trans once hoisted for extra clearance.

That's all for now. Gotta jet

I put 40k on bw ko4's with zero issues.

Glad to see you finally jumping all in! Pulling the motor is the right way to go,

Bw ko4s IMO anything much larger wouldn't be as fun driving around town... sure very fast once your cruising but it shifts the power too far to the right to keep it dynamic, the Allroad is heavy and the down low torque with ko4s is nice to have. Everything else needs rods to get full potential.

Your definitely going to want intercoolers, stock just can't handle the flow at all and heats soak very fast. Not the mention they can possibly blow end tank on only 20psi. SRM fit great and are Nicely made.

As far as stage 3 hardware, Stock fuel pump will be ok for a while, don't have to open up another can of worms, get the car back together before worrying about that , 034 maf is nice , (optional adapter to use stock airbox is cool)
most good tunes nowadays use EV550s because they are the correct dual spray pattern like the stock injectors.

Agree with Dre on the engine leveler and 4th mount point, I just did my first engine pull on the highland partout and those two things would have made it a lot easier.

And absolutely remove the trans mounts, I was halfway through and cursing that I hadn't.

Leave shift linkage intact and shift into 4th.

Have a helper with you when your ready to pull the combo out, much easier and safer with two!

Just my two cents but if i was building a stage 3 engine I think I would do head gaskets, I have seen a lot of allroads for sale with blown headgaskets.

See you on Saturday and I will be bringing tools!

Nice tip about the 4th snatch point... Pulled 4 2.7t's and always end up with a 2x4 to get the engine to sit straight and line up with the mount holes. Agreed on the 550's as well. Not too big and I'm still on stock fuel pump for now with stock FPR. I'd do silicone intercooler hoses while it's out and I am victim of blowing the end caps off stock intercoolers. Doing the timing while its out? Relocate or delete the aux pump for simplicity. If you relocate it I'd consider a lower temp switch for it. Looking forward to the progress

I considered timing but in actuality it's prime season time and really I just want to drive my car, not watch it sit for two months so I can drive it for a little bit before putting it up again for the winter.

Just going to do the clutch, all the drivetrain fluids and put it back in for now. Will start gathering parts for stage 3 though so I'll keep compiling this.

For the time being though I'm looking into E85. Casey put the bug in my ear and I can't stop thinking about it. I've seen some really strong numbers on K03s with E85. Really impressive numbers actually, with FATs to back them up. I've said it before, I already love my stage 2+ so I'm sure E85 will be awesome.

busy week so the motor is still sitting in the car, but I want to have it out, clutch changed and back in before next Friday.

Thanks for all the advice all, feel free to keep dropping thoughts and ideas by. As I've said, this is all uncharted territory for me.
