    640 Mod

Hey guys I wanted to bring this up again because it's the best free mod that I have ever done to any car.

I was doing some research to get a sportier feel from my steering wheel. I always felt like these cars had very light steering and that you can not really feel the road. After a while I found the good old 640 mod thread and it was exactly what I wanted. The fuse is behind a panel that sits by your left knee (search 640 mod and you'll find the thread pretty easy). Some say that it makes the car hard to turn in parking lots. While that is true it's nothing unbearable and the mod feels great on back roads and the highways.

What this fuse is doing is giving power to the servotronic steering assist thingy. So when you pull it your basically just turning off your servo and only running the power steering pump. It makes the car feel much tighter handling wise and makes taking corners a blast.

Tldr pull your 640 fuse for sportier steering. Causes no issues. Shits great never look back.

    Link to the mentioned thread?

But also, not all our cars had servotronic so not everyone has this relay I guess...Like last time I checked, my 06 manual doesn't have it anyway so you are now just on par with my "sportier" handling :)

    ''mod''

well, I remove it since day 1. Imho it's way better, I was use to drive without power steering.

The feeling is better, but not that hard, can still drive with knees.

pulled it, took the car for a spirited spin (meh), came back, turned into my block from a dead stop, car felt like a tractor... Immediately reinstalled.

It's not for everyone, but man do I love it. And yes I use the term mod very loosely here

I wouldn't be positive this won't have negative side effects.. You are seemingly putting more than the intended stress on the steering system/power steering system.

Something to think about. In the long run at least.

I ran the "mod" for almost a year and put it back in. I had my steering rack fail a few months after putting it back in (around 110k miles). I have no idea if they are related, but its enough to make me never take the relay back out.

I did this after reading it on Nick's Blog, however after about a week i put it back in. What would be a good 'mod' is to put a switch on the dash that disables it for highway use and re-enables it for city, parking etc.

Question for you guys that did this... I think Im having some issues with my servotronic... With my relay installed, above 40mph feels exactly the same as steering with the relay removed. Is that normal?

Sounds normal to me. It should have less 'effect' as you go faster.

I did this "mod" about 7 years ago. I have a switch installed because my wife hates the feeling. I always have it turned off. Anyways, long story short, I've no negative effects on my steering and it gets switched on and off somewhat consistently. BTW, my switch his hidden in the little cubby under the steering where our owners manual goes. I can take a pic and show you what I mean if you guys really want.
