    I have a 1.8T with a 5 speed manual quatro.
When the car is not moving all gears go in no problem. When i start driving shifting out of 1st is really hard and then it has troubles getting into second and it does that for all the rest when stationary 1st and reverse engage no problem.
Just replaced both master and slave and bled them no change.
    Please help!

Did this problem develop suddenly or gradually over a period of time daily driving the car? When shifting gears is difficult, this is typically caused by the clutch not fully releasing when the clutch pedal is pressed down all the way. Besides problems with the master and slave cylinders, there are possible problems that can occur with the clutch pressure plate spring and pressure plate wear auto adjuster parts in the pressure plate assembly. If the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinders are working properly, then the trans must be removed to troubleshoot the cause for the clutch not fully releasing with the pedal pressed down all the way.

This problem can be caused/provoked by worn out synchronizers in the transmission also, but that is not as common as a clutch release hydraulic or mechanical malfunction.

Where does your clutch engage / disengage on the pedal? Is the slip point right on top? or further down the pedal.

It happened all of a sudden. And it engages/disengage right at the top of the pedal.

Sounds like its time for a clutch. If you go through with it, make sure to replace the throw out bearing and pilot bearing.

Yeah it starts to look like the clutch, bearings, and the fork need be replaced. Just wondering what clutch to get at this point. I have my eye on a valeo single mass flywheel setup from ecs. Anyone have experience with it?

sorry to piggyback but im having a similar problem. It is strange thought because its only first gear and it is only hard to put into gear sometimes. all the other gears are perfect its just sometimes when im trying to get the car going it takes a little force to put it into first.

From what I've been led to believe its the clutch fork, they have the tendency to crack and/or bend. Again that's what ive been led to believe after talking to a few audi mechanics

but would that be the case if it happens pretty sporadically? I havent thought about seeing if there is any correlation to anything (cold weather, heat, etc) but sometimes its smooth as butter and other times it just doesnt want to go into gear.

I have the same one and have been happy with it myself. Maybe have about 25k miles on it now. I pretty much changed everything while I was in there that could be changed just short of a transmission rebuild. Clutch disc, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing(<-all in Valeo clutch kit), pilot bearing, clutch fork, rear main seal, and then the pivot parts(screw, plastic wedge and spring). The pivot parts I would say are a necessity when you do the job. When I got my transmission out all 3 were broken.

Thats only really a problem on a transverse 1.8t, the audi longitudinal transmissions are stout, Ive never had one crack yet. (Not saying it can't happen, but highly unlikely on these cars)

Clutch is a safe bet on his car, especially with a really high release point.

If the transmission was fine before and clutch engagement was around the middle of pedal travel (normal) then suddenly doesn't want to work, look at the rod behind the clutch pedal. It may have bent causing the clutch to no longer engage/disengage. Happened to me once. Fortunately that's a cheap and quick fix.

If the clutch engagement point has moved up towards the top of pedal movement, then it's typically a sign of the clutch wearing/breaking and in need of attention. You should also notice the RPM fluctuate as you try to maintain speed. I've had this happen to me with a relatively new clutch. The springs broke causing the clutch to start slipping. The clutch is design to take the abuse and damage away from the transmission itself.
