    Insurance discount devices?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Any of you guys use those devices that gather data for X number of days through the obd port to give you discounts on your auto insurance based on your driving? Just looking at getting opinions since I just started using one.

yeah...i used one for the required 3 months. it was cool for about 3 seconds....but i ended up driving like a grandpa and would swear at myself everytime I'd accelerate or brake hard. with a perfect score we'd get a 15% reduction in our rate. we didn't get a perfect score (almost impossible to get, by the way). was VERY happy to take it out and send it back.

Lol. Actually I am grounded for a while now due to my shenanigans on the fwy one night returning from dinner with the wife. I never really go wot from the stop due to traffic where I live and I am careful with braking. They offer upto 40% discount with a perfect record. I am lingering around 23% right now. Thought I would take advantage of it while being grounded 😃😃

I'd hook one up if I had a Prius.
Two horns grow out on my forehead every time I'm in my S6. I hope to God that I don't have enough money laying around in my account one of these days to buy a super car or I just may have to wear depends every time I drive.

I'm a product executive for one of the largest insurance companies. These devices like it or not are the way of paying for insurance in the future. Miles driven and making sure you don't drive at 2 in the morning are the key factors which drives your discount percentage. Yes it does track acceleration, hard braking and now even idle time which will influence the percent to a lesser degree. The overall earned discount rate is built into the overall average premiums. Meaning for those that try it and earn a discount, those aggregate amounts are then offset into everybody else's rate. App versions are coming out very soon which will alleviate the need to plug it into your OBD port.

So how does acceleration and hard braking factor into the discount? In a negative way I assume and if so why?

    Insurance discount devices?

I actually laughed when the ins lady on the phone asked me if I wanted to do that. They would drop me immediately... that's too much.

I guess that's my point. How does this device determine your driving skill? It can't so the insurance companies are monitoring secondary affects of your driving and making a judgement which is total nonsense IMHO.

Yup. In a negative way. They say sudden acceleration and sudden hard braking can result in accidents. They dont give a flying fuck about a driver's skills. My argument is that most accidents are caused by distracted drivers (phone, eating, drinking) , people jumping traffic lighta and slow drivers. I was offered this device last year. I also laughed and told them straight up that you guys would double my premiums based on this device. I was paying about $115/month before the renewal came up. No claims/accidents on my side but the premium went up by about $13/month. No biggie for most but I wanted to see what was going on. Obvious bs of area rates going up. The agent suggested the device. He said regardless of end result, I would still get 10% discount just for participation in the program. Renewal pretty much clashed with my shenanigans so thought to give this device a shot since I am not gonna drive like I stole it for a little while now

My gf and I just started with the liberty mutual app based program, 5% off the top "minimum discount". I'm not driving any differently so every recorded trip has several acceleration/brake events. She however is driving miss daisy and so far our combined discount is 18% heh

I was kind of hoping they'd send me an email asking me how every single time I drive it's a race.

lol, you can set a speed warning. A lot cheaper and more effective than a wife as a speed limiter. Note: I don't have this set because I would just ignore it anyway.

Yea, I would probably get dropped immediately too. Most of my driving is hard accelerations...

It's never a good idea to tell on yourself. Also if you look at their chart. Almost all the time is high risk driving time. I use my car on the weekends mostly. So I drive in the high danger times. This tool would only hurt me.

The Insurance/Goombah protection racket is bad enough as it is. Installing spy devices is even worse. That's horrendous.

Yeah this. I dunno why ANYONE would sell themselves for 15%.

You know secretly in the end, they will use any negative data to raise your rates that you "saved" with this.

At first I thought "Ooh! Discounts!" Then after I got really angry at the app for telling me that I "suck" at defensive driving, I took it out and sent it back lol.

I can see this device could come handy for non-car people to maximize the deductions but it would hit car enthusiasts pretty hard because let's get real, 99% of car guys would drive their cars hard.

For a few months I had an extra car. So, I registered for the dongle, put it on my car, wifes car and the one that didn't move. One that didn't move (trailblazer) got 15%, wife got 10%, my TTS got 8%. When I bought a Q7, I poked around on the website. I clicked the "replace vehicle" option and tried the Q7 replacing the Trailblazer or the TTS. I found that replacing the trailblazer kept the 15% discount. So, I sold it to a friend at the same time I sold the TTS and kept the insurance that way.

A year later, I traded the Q7 on an S6. Still getting the 15% on the S6. :)

Moral is: find some derelict car you can put the thing on that doesn't move and then "replace it" on your policy. You'll get to keep the discount, seemingly forever (I'm going on year 4 now).
