    Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 + Vibration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently upgraded my tires ti the new Michelin A/S 3+. For thew first 100 miles, it was smooth and very quiet. Recently, I feel sort of a vibration in the steering wheel when turning the wheel slightly. This is very apparent at low speeds and when I hold the wheel at the top of the rim. It's smooth when driving on the highway, but I do hear kind of a whirring noise now.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Get it balanced and see what they say. Could be a slight bent rim. I had a slight bent rim on a different car I own and got vibration in the steering wheel.

Wheel-bearing issue that happens to coincide with new tires? Maybe the tire lubricant has worn off and that is affecting the handling/noise?

It seems like you would know if you had bent a wheel in the last 100 miles, but there is a chance.

I put on a set of used peelers I got from a member on here. I did not see any noticeable bends or cracks, but I'll definitely ask the dealer to check it out.

Car is at 25k miles and I had the stock Cinturato P7 summers on them, didn't notice it at all until I replaced the tires.

Wait, you put the new tires on a set of used wheels you just picked up? I guess that could up the chance of a bent wheel.

The other possibility is that one of the balancing weights fell off.

I mean I didn't see anything visible when I picked them up, unless the shop jacked something up when they put the new tires on. They did drive fine for a while, I wonder if the tire was just getting broken in?

Did they use a Hunter Road Force balancer? That will show if the wheels/tires are out of round; small bends might not be noticeable.

It can take 500 miles to get rid of all the lubricant, but it does not seem like that would cause vibration/noise. I would check the wheels and look for where balancing weights might have recently fallen off.

If you did any aggressive driving during the first couple days, launches or quick accelerations, it's possible you spun the tire on the wheel a bit causing it to become out of balance. The adhesive tire shops use take a day or two to completely dry and bond the tire to the wheel.

I recently got the AS3+ (Two weeks ago). Grip is amazing and I have no vibration issues.

My dad has had them on his A6 avant for the past 5000 miles and he's had no issues with vibration either.

I didn't have any vibration but at 68 MPH they would howl. Dealer replaced the whole set and they did the exact same thing. They never had any issues with the non plus model in years prior. Returned second set and replaced with the pilot super sports, no noise and super quiet.

I forgot to mention that I'm stock everything on 19" peelers. You many be able to classify my issue as a vibration/humming as well. Between 68 and 72mph it would hum/whir/howl, much like the sound of a wheel bearing but it was definitely the tires. I tried lowering the PSI, didn't matter.

Strange, I'm actually getting the vibration/humming that laakness mentioned in the previous post, but at 74MPH and on the pilot super sports. I'm on the 19" titanium rotors. I tried going up and down on the psi also, no change.

Sounds like at least one of the wheels might be out-of-round on one or both sides.

You should put all 4 on a Hunter Road Force Balancer. Been there, done that too much with current wheels and tires.

Also, despite what the optimistic "green/ok" road force measurement says on HRFB, get the actual road force in lbs for each wheel from the tire tech. The HRFB will "green" anything under like 20lbs. But believe me, I've been through a lot and I can feel/hear about 5lbs road force, so anything higher than that chances are you will too. I think the 20lbs or less number is for people that are either oblivious or maybe on large sidewall cars or SUVs it's less noticeable. On my S5, it's audible though it produces no real shake anywhere.

The fact that you get a vibration in the steering wheel seems to indicate a front tire. Start there, aim for under 5lbs road force. If the tire is way out of whack, loosen it on the rim and reposition it as that often helps a surprising amount. Worst case, a tire or rim is out of round and cannot be fixed. The HRFB has a tool like a record player arm that can be sat on the rim bead while it spins that can measure roundness/runout.

I felt a slight vibration at those speeds and when I rotated and balanced the tires everything was fine.
