    ABS module replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello, had the ABS and ESP lights come on the other day. Scanned for codes and got the following (2004 S4 6MT):

    VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.2
    Friday, 06 May 2016, 14:28:42:61179
    Control Module Part Number: 8E0 614 517 Q
    Component and/or Version: ABS/ESP allrad 4533
    Software Coding: 04595
    Work Shop Code: WSC 12345
    VCID: 361F4B20015F
    2 Faults Found:
01826 - Sensor for Steering Angle (G85); Supply Voltage Terminal 30
    35-10 - - - Intermittent
    01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
    57-00 - Electric Circuit Failure

I picked a used ABS module from a 2002 1.8T, anyone know if it's compatible with my 2004 S4? The ECU communicates with the ABS module from the 1.8T when plugged in but NOT connected to the ABS pump, but when I connect the 1.8T ABS module to the ABS pump and try to reprogram, I get an error message. (didn't write down the error message at the time).

Do I specifically need a new ABS module or a used ABS module from an S4? Hence ABS module are not cross model compatible.... thoughts?

    Thanks

If I remember correctly I had the same issue but you might just have to replace your brake pads

Ive been fighting this issue for awhile. I had a wheel speed sensor replaced which was actually the original code and no change, both lights still on. Ive been toying with buying a used ABS module online but can't find reasonably priced ones anywhere. Where did you find yours?

So the brake pads have been replaced and the dash light are still coming up. Also same VCDS code:

    1 Fault Found:
    01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
    57-00 - Electric Circuit Failure

I got the used ABS module from a salvage yard for 30 dollars.

I also had the same issue and ended up replacing the pressure sensor mounted to the side of the ABS unit. No issues since replacing it. I brought a Bosch sensor for $120

So I purchases a pressure sensor. But how do I replace it? Just unscrew the one that's currently in the ABS module and replace with new? Do I need to be concerned with pressure in the brake lines or brake fluid leaking everywhere?

I had this issue starting with a bad wheel speed sensor. Finally decided it was the ABS module so I found a working used one and took it to another member on here to replace. He figured out that the clock spring was bad and was part of the problem.

I plan to replace the pressure sensor tomorrow and bleed the brake lines. I'll update once I'm finished.

Well, replaced the pressure sensor and botched the brake bleed.... still getting the same lights and code in VCDS. Will redo the brake bleed in a few days and update.

I don't think its compatible with the 02 1.8t because of the servo-tronic, I don't think other models have that, I could be wrong. I just replaced mine with a used one, and had to have it programmed with a vagcom to the car to keep the lights off, and had to bleed out the brakes after. also had to do a steering angle sensor calibration

I have a used one out of a 2004 S4 that I picked up as a spare for my car. I ended up having my unit repaired actually so it's been sitting around. Let me know if you would be interested.

Send your module to cheapabs or module masters. Should be around $2-300 and turnaround time is usually a week. I had a local repair guy do it for the same price but it was the same thing. These modules tend to fail in the same way. Fixed my abs and esp light problems for good

Alternatively you could find one being sold by someone like the gentleman above. However if you use a different module than the one that came with your car, you have to recode the module to your ecu via vagcom. Not hard at all and I've posted the procedure before. 5 minutes tops. You should just be aware that you'll need vagcom available if you replace your module with another one. The positive side to this is that you'll have almost no downtime to wait so if you're a busy guy and the S is your daily driver, buying a used and repaired module may be a better option

If you need one fixed then check with Matt at Cheap ABS, they can usually repair your current module for around $150 and you do not need to recode it if it is the one that come with the car or has already been coded to the car. Google Cheap ABS in Kansas and you can see the site info. He repaired mine about a year ago and it has been good since. Unless yours is unrepairable (very few) then Matt can fix it alot cheaper than buying another replacement.

Sorry, did not see pwest15's reply but I agree with him and also what I was saying. Also fixed mine and have had no issue since. If you have the 5.7 module and the B6 S4's all do, then it should be $139 for the repair and $11 to ship it back to you in the US. You pay to send it to him so that depends on your local.

Yes, you can drive the car but be careful with it obviously and cover the exposed pump with something like a plastic bag and tape to keep dust and moisture out of there until you get the module back and put back on.

So I did like in the video today and removed my ABS module. Went pretty smoothly. After I started the car I got a blinking red parking brake light. Is this simply due to the ABS module being removed? I drove the car around the lot and my brakes seem fine, stops on a dime and no issue whatsoever. Has anyone else removed theirs to send out for repair and had this light?

Yes, you will have no abs or esp or speedometer with the abs module removed. I wouldn't recommend driving it too much without an abs module. I can't be sure but it might turn limp-home mode on in the ecu because the car thinks you have no brakes.

Yes, the lights are normal when the ABS module is removed. Your brakes will continue to work just without ABS assist (no big deal really). Just ensure you have the pump covered where the module was removed even if you don;t drive it. That will keep dirt and debris out of there and avoid any issues. Once you install your repaired module just run a scan and then clear all the codes and you should be good to go.

Hey guys, I'm gonna dig this thread up again. I'm currently trying to remove my abs module to send in for repairs.

I've followed the video, however when I try and pull the module up access the 2 lowest screw (of the six total) my module won't budge. I really don't want to damage any of the hard lines. Has anyone else had this issue or am I just being a baby and need to really yank the module up?

pull the rubber piece from the firewall, you should be able to move it up a bit higher, I was able to maneuver it up high enough without bending any hoses, make sure both side clips have been taken off. throw a picture up of your progress so we can let you know our ideas as well.

are you sending it to cheapabs.com?

I'll give that a shot. I'm sending it to myairbags.com. They had the cheapest price and a (limited) lifetime warranty

It still doesn't want to move... seems these lines which go down the firewall side of the module don't want to budge. Sorry picture isn't great, only working with my phone and trying to work between conference calls haha

Here is a better picture of the metal hoses that I think are holding it up... i can barely pull the module up like a half an inch. Just has a ton of resistance.

    ABS module replacement

Ok so I got the module out. Key was to rotate it towards the passenger side while pulling it up. Then got it propped on the windshield washer reservoir. It took some force to get it to this position.

No worries! I just didn't want to break anything on my brand new (to me) S4. I had a module repaired for my old B5 Passat and I recall it being a lot easier to remove. Probably a bit more flexibility in packaging with the 1.8t vs the V8

now make sure you tape the module so the elements do not fall out, and cover the open portion in the bay and tape it shut to keep dust and debris out, also, you will lose your speedometer so have a GPS app handy on your phone to monitor your speed, and sometimes your odometer will not move. I have about 1200 miles on mine that never got recorded.

I have a B6 A4 daily that I can drive while it's getting repaired. No snow tires on the S4 so not gonna risk driving until nicer weather returns to New England. Got everything taped/covered so it's ready to get sent off.
