    Neuspeed Pulley Failure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was driving the car and the battery warning came on, I went to pull into a gas station and then noticed I had no power steering. First thought was the belt broke.. Open the hood and I see the neuspeed pulley had broken off of the motor, I had never seen this before myself this is just a FYI for any of you thinking about this part.

The Pulley has been on the car about a month and was professionally installed

These cars aren't fans of an upgraded pulley, hope you have the stock one still.

That sucks, yet another reason not to waste your money on pulleys.

I didn't know there was a high failure rate with these. I read your typical its not worth it and its worth it threads on here and the Golf MK6 forums.. One positive so far is Neuspeed said they would refund me in full for the part... but Getting this repaid is becoming complicated, There was nothing left of the neuspeed pulley on the front of the motor other then the pulley bolt itself which means I have no idea were TDC is. Fast forward we got the pulley bolt out line the motor back up and install a new serpentine belt and the stock pulley but now it wont start. I suspect the timing may be off a hair but have to wait until tomorrow to get back into it.

I assume you had to impact gun the bolt out. Watch out as without tension the timing gear that the pulley keys too is also similarly keyed to the crankshaft. It can become unkeyed and its hard to tell. You could back off the pulley bolt two turns. Loose enough that it has some play but tight enough that if keyed in the correct spot it should feel like a solid connection. If it is off the keys it will have some wobble to it.

So the bolts broke or the part broke?

    Big difference IMO
The bolts may not have been torqued right or correct strength

I've run these on my r32 and 1.8t
Made nice gains in throttle response and engine revs

Based on the pictures and description the center mounting point sheared and the bolt and that piece were left on the crank.

That's a really strange way to fail
To me it looks as if it wasn't torqued right and was wobbling

I'm not familiar with this pulley; does it have a core collar that gets bolted to the crank and then the pulley bolts to the collar? Or did the pulley itself sheer off of its own collar? If the later - yikes! That's manufacture defect for sure and I'd stay away from them for sure.

In regards to timing, there is one 'notch' on the outer sprocket (which is the oil pump chain's sprocket) that has a different formation than the rest. The harmonic balancer MUST line up to this. If you don't line it up and bolt it down, you WILL damage the face of those splines and WILL be off on timing. It's kind dummy proof in a way. There's no need to know TDC as this different notch in the spline formation is the determining factor. Let me know if you want a pic on this.

In regards to harmonic balancers / pulleys (I posted in this in 2 other pulley related threads); as an engine builder, unless you are balancing/building the motor WITH that pulley (which isn't a harmonic balancer any more <-- critical factor), do NOT run it. It will change the harmonics of the rotating assembly and you may run into accelerated bearing/ring wear than normal. I don't care how long in time nor how many miles a manufacture states they test their product. Bottom line is, on a mass produced product there is going to be a variance in tolerances; nature of the fact. Since that is the case, that is why each engine (speaking general to any car manufacture) has tolerances it must be within from 'spec'. Imagine you getting the 'lucky' motor, that has just the right (or really incorrect tolerances) measurements (but within spec) and remove the harmonic balancer. It's a recipe for issues. It's not like we are dealing with a hand made Bentley / Ferrari motor here boys! If you 'want' to do "something" to the balance, buy a fluidamper one. Read up, do your research and you'll see why I've shared what I have shared.

    Neuspeed Pulley Failure

Mine just broke today, had it on for about 3 months. Managed to drive the car home from the canyon.

My fluidampner has been strong for the last couple months it has been on. However, Fluidampner has a ton of experience making pulleys.
