Towing Enclosed Car Trailer with 2015 Q7

Hello everyone, was wondering if anyone out there has had experience towing cars in an enclosed car hauler? I have a 2011 Lambo Gallardo that I'll be needing to transport in an enclosed cargo trailer 1-2 times per year. Up until now, I've always had a private company do the towing for me, but I recently had a bad experience with them. They scratched up my side door and refused to admit guilt, so I'm done with that.

We have a 2015 Q7 Gas V6 Supercharged, OEM towing package (I will be installing trailer electric brake controller next to steering wheel)
Max towing capacity = 6,600 LBS
Max tongue weight = 660 LBs

Lambo weighs about 3,000 LBS on 1/4 fuel tank
Trailer weighs about 3,400 LBS (Pace American Outback)

So the total weight of the lambo and trailer combined is about 6,400 LBS.

    Here are my questions:

    1) Has anyone ever hauled a setup like this with their Q7 V6 gas?
    2) If so, how was the drive? How much stress and strain will it put on the Q7, decrease in performance or lifespan of the Q7 engine? I really want our Q7 to last us a good while, just not sure if towing this much weight 1-2 times per year will cause harm
    3) How do you go about installing a Trailer Brake Controller?
    4) How was visibility from side mirrors?
    5) At 6,400 LBS I should be OK?

I'm basically needing to know if the Q7 is even designed for this type of activity. I'm assuming it is since it came with this towing package. If all is clear, I will be installing a trailer electric brake controller.

My other options are to trade in my A5 and purchase something like Ford F150 king ranch.

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

    Thanks,

I see no issue towing 6400lbs. These are just the max "Safe" tow ratings giving out by the NHTSA. The Q7 if needed could tow up to 8000lbs but with a bit of caution.

I don't see stress and strain being an issue, its a very solid chassis and engine and wouldn't worry.

Most trailer brake controllers have basic instructions. Some trailers have automatic brakes that apply when the vehicles brakes are applied. I know most short horse trailers are this way.

The side mirrors are not the best for towing and leave visibility to be desired.

Thanks for the information on this. I spent some time yesterday looking for a connection for the trailer brake controller supposedly located somewhere underneath the dash on drivers side or in the glove box. Could not find it in either location. So, even though my Q7 came with the towing package, I'll still need to have the trailer dealer install a brake controller for me. I'm I correct that there in no hardware plug-in for the brake controller on the Q7? Called the dealership and they were clueless.

The Q7 has trailer sway control, which is control by the vehicle it self, but it does not have trailer brake control.

Ok. It's odd because I ran across a few posts on other forums stating that the Q7 had a 4-prong plug-in underneath the dash for a brake controller install. Thanks again though.

You should be fine on towing that weight. I have towed my 3200 lb Audi TT Quattro on a heavy steel open trailer and been very pleased with the ease in which the Q7 handled it. A friend in Calif tows a Boxster in an enclosed trailer with his Q7 and reports no problems. Both of ours are TDI however so we have lots more torque available but your 3.0t actually has more horsepower. I looked back and found a great post to help with the brake controller install. http://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-d...rness-2846156/
    Good luck!

NICE tow boat DEEZ. We have an old MC Tristar that we have had for 20 years. Towed my kids with it. (Son and DIL skied intercollegiate at Auburn. ) Now we tow our grand kids with it! Mastercraft builds solid boats! Ours stays at he lake and doesn't get towed much but the TDI Q7 is the fourth vehicle that I have owned for towing it. Of a 1995 Ford Econoline, a 1999 GMC Savanah, and a 2007 Toyota Tundra, The Q7 tows and launches it the best.
