Stage 1 effects on stock cat

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I am thinking of going Stage 1 sometime this summer and I am wondering about how a 126K stock cat will do with the tune. (I imagine it will but) Will it effect the life span of the cat? And/or melt it? This is all important since I live on California (and our strict smog laws), plus I don't really feel like spending $750 for a new cat

    Thanks

I mean, it kinda does. I don't want to be exactly blowing through cats here I know that is an exaggeration but I want some idea of what it will do to the cat. It will definitely run hotter at least.

It's fine. My car has been stage 1 tuned for 100k miles and still passes smog with the original cat.

Have well over 100k on my stock cat tuned since like 04 on various tunes threw out the years.

All gone now but I'll go back 2 cat for smog, don't think my turbo or manifold will let me pass neways tho

What's really neat is unbolting the cat , running a test pipe, and then reinstall for emissions.

I feel bad for your guys with all this emissions BS. Out here everyone has a test pipe. I personally don't I have a hollow CAT. But before I did I was running my stage 1 with a cat for like 10k it already had 85k and I never had a problem.

just make sure the car is running properly before you get it tuned. Missfires are the #1 cat killer, if your coils are old or plugs are old deal with that first, raw unburnt fuel along with the extra heat being generated from more boost with a tune will finish off your cat if your car isnt in perfect running order.

hardly bs. all one has to do is compare the cali smog before and after emissions laws fresno and bakersfield excluded. i think its better this way and us that want performance just do a few things b4 smog or "know" someone. we only have emissions no real safety inspections or any of that nonsense.

what is bullshit is the dui style smog checkpoints. honestly cops hardly care unless ur a douche with a flat brim or look excessive modded. they are more worried about the clapped out beat to shit 90s cars dumping black smoke out the back.

A place between here and there

Runing rich is what really ruins cat converters, from stock to modded.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

I tuned at 60k im now at 99k and my cat has a rattle in it. Still passes emissions and very likely just normal wear and tear from heat cycling over 15 years. I still pass emissions it just rattles at idle
