Has anyone taken the headlights apart?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking to do a custom paint on my headlights and need to take them apart. And by that I mean more than just separating the front lens. I'm talking about literally taking the different internal guts apart, similar to the picture below from the 'silver storm' photoshoot thread.

Has anyone taken their headlights apart befote? Anyone has schematics, tutorials, DIY, etc.?

    TIA

i have taken the b8 ones completely apart to swap the projector lens. i have never tried the b8.5 one, so cant comment on those. there are a ton of hidden screws on the b8 ones,
There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who know binary and those who don't.

How involved was the process? Screwes are one thing, not concerned about those. I'm more concerned about hidden tabs, clips, etc.... One wrong movement, and I end up breaking the damn thing... ☺

The B8's and B8.5's separate with the same effort/method (I have done both).

I've read that the oven will cook the LEDs, and that a heat gun is the recommended method for LED-equipped headlights.

Nope, I just took out the D3S bulb, unscrewed the adaptive light module and both the ballasts, and stuck the light in the oven at 200 for 10 min. I used a heat gun for the other 3-4 times I've opened them, and never again. Oven was way, WAY, easier.

On both the B8 and B8.5 headlights I used a heat gun to soften the adhesive. I got impatient with both sets and ended up putting the heat gun on high setting, and probably held it too close and did not keep it moving fast enough, resulting in minor (very minor) crinkling of the glossy black plastic surface of the lens cover where it meets the housing. Maybe baking it evenly in an oven would avoid this, but I did not like the idea of putting those expensive electronic elements into an oven based on other people's success stories, without knowing the thermal limits of those components.

I have taken b8.5 lights completely apart before and it is not easy at all.

It is very easy to brake and damage and clips holding the pieces together, not to mention the access to the screws ...

If you want to paint the inside i would reach out to some companies that specialize in such services, i wouldnt attempt it yourself.
