Rear caliper boot torn, needs to be replaced

I have found some "How To" threads on this topic which is great but I only seem to need to replace the boot itself, the piston looks to be in great shape still.
Is this something I must remove from the car to do? I hate dealing with brake lines and bleeder screws... had a few snap on me before

    Disassembled, yes.

The DIYs must not have been very informative.

I thinks it's impossible to replace without first removing the piston. Good time to do a full rebuild kit with seals. Also lets you blast the calipers and paint or powder coat them for rust protection.

I just did this, but on a bench. I can see it being possible to do on the car, but a complete PITA. Best bet is to disconnect the brakeline at the caliper and maybe tie a rubber glove or something to keep too much fluid from escaping. Putting the boot on can be a pain, I found the best way to do it is to put the boot on the piston first, then seat the boot into the caliper, start spinning the piston on, then seat the top of the boot to the piston.
