Went to the drag strip...should I be upset?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2011 S4 DSG. Previous owner said there was a stage 2. APR pulley with a Solomotorsports tune on 93. I've added a AWE catback and ECS intake. Fuel 92 w/Torco. Just replaced plugs gapped to .028.

    My friend has a 2010 S4 DSG. Stock. Fuel 92 w/Torco.

My 2 best runs of 12.7 I was trapping 107/108. I used launch control. My friend said he think he didn't have launch control and was just flat footing it as you can see by his 60ft times. He was running low 13's at 107.

Is 12.7 @108 good for my stage 2 on 93 set up? I feel kind of upset because if he launched and we were trapping both 107/108. It feels like a whole stage 2 didn't help. If it matters, I was letting the TCU shift and he said he was using the paddles.

The track conditions weren't so good because we went late at night and it was getting cold. Regardless my friend and I were trapping both 108 mph. I just feel I should have been faster with my stage 2! . Is this normal, does my tune suck; or does my friend have a tune and he's not telling me lol.

Your friends 60ft times are horrible if he indeed is AWD. Heck, I ran mine last week as it sits on the streets meaning it was with a full tank of 93 and tires at 41psi and pulled 1.8x 60fts. I'm not happy with those even as I know low 1.7's could have given me another two tenths at the end of the track. I ran 12.23 at 113mph on a 40 degree day with very high moisture in the air. The track sucked in the morning. See my sig for mods.

With those 60s you at the very least run 12.4 if it was cold. 12.7 is a bit off, but the trap is just way too low for a 93 stage 2

    What's torco? Fuel additive ?

So I searched up on dragtimes for your DA and temp at 7:35pm on 4-29... -230 and 55F outside... Those are conditions for a stellar time...

I've run those kind of times in the dead of summer (horrible DA) with tune, pulley, intake, and the rest of the car was stock. Pretty sure your car is tuned because of the 12.7 passes... we haven't really seen many 1/4 times from SMS. You might be the second car to do so, think I remember a 12.4 time posted somewhere... Still, something is up.

Maybe confirm with SMS that it is in fact tuned by them? If it is then I'd consider switching to another tuner lol

Yes. I have talked to them before and they know the previous owner actually. 12.4 would be more what I wanted and higher trap. I've raced my friend on a roll and I always pull on him around 90+mph by a car length then 100+ I'm about 2 car lengths.

Don't be upset. I just made it to the strip two weeks ago for a baseline. 13.4 @ 105. 2.0 60ft. super weak but I only made two passes with no adjustments in tire pressure or cool down.

Just flashed EPL stage I + DSG last night and can't wait to get back for more practice and tuned times. Hopefully Saturday I'll be back at Martin.

Maybe you do have software installed, but it is set to stock tuning. I would find a way to ensure your tune is even active.
I'm sure if you really do have a solo tune, you can reach out to them and they can see what file was last flashed to the car.

Pop your hood, pop the top panel off the supercharger and look at your pulley. You will be able to tell if it has been swapped. The stage 2 pulley is very small and is hardly larger in diameter than the snout.

Your friend's 1/8 mph is typical for a stock tune. I think in your case it is the tune because you have an increase in the 1/8 mph compared to your friend's time, but I think the tune might be bleeding boost or changing timing in a very conservative manner. If the reported DA was that good I would blame the tune if nothing mechanically is wrong.

As others have stated, your DA conditions are awesome so I would expect you to be in the very low 12s and 112mph or better. Your time is a little perplexing. Its better than stock but probably where a stage 1 level of tune would be performing on a normal day. Its possible a pulley car on "stock" software could perform a bit better than stock in the 1/4 mile since you would get a bit more torque out of first gear starting from 0rpm launch but I dont think a car with a stock tune and pulley would necessarily trap 108mph. Here's what I would do.

    1. Check your pulley. If it is the stock pulley. You may have just a stage 1 level of tune. That's ok. You can go from there.
    2. If you have a smaller pulley, I would see if you can log the car to see if you are running stock level of tune or if your tune/car is having issues on a stage 2 tune.
    3. Contact Solo Motorsport and give them your VIN and see if you have their tune. If your car is healthy, send them any data you have and let them know your car is not performing as it should.
    4. If you have a smaller pulley and the car is healthy and you dont want to deal with Solo or would just prefer a tune that has a lot more potential, I'd contact Tony at EPL and just load his software on and that will probably take care of everything and end any headaches.

Thanks for everyone chiming in. I really appreciate it. I gave Solomotorsports a call and they did confirm it was a stage 2 tune. The pulley they are not sure. I'm going to measure it. Josh was great at Solomotorsports. Although the previous owner bought the software. Josh sent me an updated Tune and help me trouble shoot some things. I'm going to measure the pulley and try the new software and report back. Let's just hope by my butt tune I can tell the difference. If not it's off to the track this Friday. I really hope its not mechanical related. I'll probably need to buy a vagcom.

COuld be heat or any number of things. My car ran 13.3 stock and 12.7 on Stage 1, so not close to 12.1 that some are saying. I trapped like 107 on Stage 1 too. The track I go to can be a bit slower too, which is a factor. There is a track in MD that people run .3 faster and a few MPH higher with the same setups.

I measured the face is the pulley with a ruler and it measured 63mm, but I wasnt right up against it. What do you guys think, does this look like an upgraded pulley? I asked the previous owner and he said the previous owner before him said he had the pulley on and stage 2 software. I just loaded the updated stage 2 software during lunch. I'll see in a little if I can feel the difference.

Let us know how the revised tune feels and if possible would be nice to see how it performs at the track now

Ok drove the car home and according to the butt dyno it feels faster. It feels it pulls harder and quicker throughout the power band. So much traffic so only got it up to 80-90. I'll try and go a little higher mph later. Maybe even test and tune it again this Friday.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

What numbers are people putting down for B8 S4 EPL tunes on 93 octane?

One recently ran an 11.8 @ 116. I would go back to the track Friday on the revised tune. If same result I would look at other options.

Where are you located in WA? In the Seattle metro area we only have 92 octane. Are your putting in an octane booster?

Bite the bullet and get an EPL tune. I've had 4 different tunes on this car, one being a SMS tune. EPL is the best available. Worth the money.
