Paint chip on roof from rock - questions regarding painting

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a chip in the paint on my roof from what I assume was a rock. My S4 is Estoril Blue (LX5P paint code)- I'll include the link to the product I'm planning on buying. The chip is relatively small, check out the picture below to see a comparison. Despite its size, I am concerned with it rusting or causing chipping of more paint around the edges. I'm planning on touching the spot up this weekend, but had a couple questions about how to go about it.

    1. I've seen posts on here recommending Dr ColorChip products. Here is the one I'm looking to buy. I know I've got the right paint color, but I'm not sure if I need to get something with a clear coat spray as well, or if this product matches my needs most accurately.

    2. I've never done any touching up of paint on a luxury car before, however I've previously owned Subarus where the touch-up process was slightly less meticulous. Is the SealAct Blending solution necessary? Do I need primer?

Any tips or guidance would be welcome!

Having just gone through a self-repaired chip on the hood of mine, I can tell you it all comes down to how much time and effort (and money) you want to put into the repair. AmmoNYC has a good video on youtube explaining a pretty in-depth process, which is the route I took. It will require a good amount of time and mostly minor tools (but do need a dual-action polisher to remove wet-sanding marks) and can very nearly repair the chip to "like-new."

I did manage to get a free bottle of touch-up paint from a local body shop, by the way, so check around before ordering anything.

For the chip on my hood, which was very noticeable (to me, for sure) I did take the time to do it as Larry describes in the video... for some smaller / less obvious chips that I noticed during detailing, I simply put a couple coats of paint and then some clearcoat over top just to protect the area from corrosion... not perfect, but still does look better than an uncovered chip!

Lastly, do let the paint / clearcoat cure for several days before wet sanding / polishing. My first go-round, I only waited 1 day (overnight) and ended up polishing the touch-up right out of the chip.

Dr. Colorchip is 110% easy to use. Matches perfectly. NOthing more needed. Use a steady hand and good glasses if you need them. You won't be sorry. Good stuff.

I have a few chips as well on the hood and bumper. Planning on going the Dr. Colorchip route. Maybe a clear bra after?

I would just use Dr. Colorchip. Paint chip repair is never perfect and it is most of the way there without spending hours trying to fix the chip. The primer solution isn't necessary but while you are buying the Dr. Colorchip I would pick it up.

The SealAct Blending Solution is included, is that a sort of primer? By the sound of it, I'm guessing it's more of a clear coat/finisher.

No it's the solution that you use to wipe off excess that might spill over onto the other paint and it effectively "blends" it in so the chip is filled in but not too high nor too much. It also seals the paint. Larger chips and scratches can be filled, sanded and then polished. That's what I've done.

Look it up on the Dr Color Chip site then cross shop amazon. Not sure if it's out there.

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I don't think I'll need to sand and polish this based on how small it is.
