Calling all cheapskates-resonator delete or Muffler delete-sound difference ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay so I just bought an inexpensive 200 cell plug n play cat.I'm starting by getting my exhaust guy to run a 2.5 or 3 inch d/p from it all the way to the resonator,he says little cost difference between the 2. What would the soundtrack difference be between a resonator delete OR a dual muffler delete. No theorizing please, members have done both, Id appreciate if you would chime in...

3" pipe is not only overkill but will reduce performance. Simply because the 3" DP will dump into a 2.5" or less exhaust thereby causing blockage. Just as a 2" / 2.25" pipe is restrictive, too large of a diameter causes uneven flow of exhaust gases. You want some back pressure.
You want to run a complete 2.5" exhaust all the way to the tips. Changing diameter causes uneven flow. The resonator is about cabin drone, plus it is restrictive. I would suggest an X-pipe but since you are only one sided exhaust ports it doesn't work like it would with a dual bank V8 or V6.. ( I'm assuming you are running the 2.0T ).
As for muffler delete, it only makes sense in a racing situation where you are running wot 85% of the time. You can go to an unrestrictive muffler set up. It will give you the tone you want and allow you to pass inspections without hassle...

Optimal would be to run a header upstream then DP then your 2.5" exhaust to unrestrictive mufflers. The quest being an even flow from exhaust ports to tips..

^Some great info there....Thanks for that.

I am going to be running a custom system too shortly....2.5" based on your feedback. I've got Magnaflow mufflers and the USP HFC. I've also got a 2.25" flex pipe but would it even be possible or recommended to use it at this point?

The only thing I am not sure is my resonator box at the back...It is pretty rusted so I don't want to use it in a new setup and have it fall off 10k later, but I will if removing it will create drone inside the cabin....

That information about size and back pressure is for a naturally aspired engine. The 2.0 is forced induction. Therefore bigger is always better. Just don't step the size down once you've stepped it up. So once you've gone to 3" don't step it down to 2.5" unless you've split it with a merge collector. 3" to 2 2.5". Or keep it 2.5" all the way back. I would definitely remove or change out the resonator because if you measure the inlets and outlets of the stocker you will find it to be quite the restriction. Same goes for the muffler. Basically replacing everything back from the downpipe is the easiest to fix flow and sound at once.

There is a table in this link showing max horsepower supported for different pipe diameters for rough calculations.

Thanks all, good info re exhaust technicals.Whether I run the larger d/p or not if the dual resonator inlets are retained I will not be stepping down as it is then dual all the way to the exhaust tips, varying between 2 and 2.25" so according to the table you linked ODS,I should be okay with flow regardless.
Some good info here Ben :http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...t-past-stage-1
If I had the $$'s ATM I would be doing something far more exotic so I still want to know the potential sound difference in my thread question please.

This is the setup I installed.. Granted the S4 V8 is different then your application but in all Downpipes and all piping angles X-pipe and clamps cost me less than $700..

This was the collection parts before cutting fitting and assembling...

I did have to add 4 90 degree angles and delete 2 of the 45 degrees but I was expecting some changes along the way..

Thanks and interesting , it must sound the goods but its far removed from my 2.0,there are members here that deleted either their resonator or mufflers to gain some soundtrack FWIW.
Please chime in as if I had some reports on this it may save me a lot of frigging around...

just ordered a 2.5" downpipe from Amazon (lol) for $99, Link Here if you want it too. What's the stock catback size? If it's 2.5" I'll just do the muffler delete and a HFC or test pipe and call it a day.

UPS just had a spring sale and I snaffled a HFC for a great price, their still a great price and the couple of reviews, if believable tell the good and the little bad about them-are they going to pass in Cal ? we don't have that but have all sorts of other totally shitty compliance to do ...
