    Thoughts on OZ Leggera wheels

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thinking of finding a set of these in 20" so that we can run the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires. This way we will have a year round ride with no compromise in performance or handling. Also looks like this setup will end up about 20-25 lbs lighter per wheel which should also give a nice performance gain as well. Anyone else run the OZ wheels on their SQ5 or even the Q5?

Unless they have changed the AS3, they do poorly in snow. I called tirerack and they referred to them as a 3 season tire.

It would be worth a call to tirerack or a look at their test results and reviews online.

Living in OKC we don't need a full on snow tire, all seasons do very well here since we only get maybe 2-3 snow events a year and they are usually less than 3" per event. We live near the snow route as well so the roads are usually cleared by the first day or so, this being the wifes daily driver and her making her own hours she doesn't even have to get out if she doesn't want to.

I agree with mjfloyd1 about the AS3 really being a three season tire. I loved them on my previous cars as long as it wasn't snowing. If you're going to use them on snow, you're better off getting some dedicated snows or an all season like the Conti DWS 06.

For the OZ wheels, I haven't used them before, but you can generally feel pretty comfortable with manufacturers who also make OEM wheels (like OZ does). My other rule is nothing made in China or Thailand.

FYI, you'll probably save more like 10 lbs per corner, which will still be noticeable. The OEM 21s are around 35 lbs.

Several have said the AS3 last 20k miles or less. I'd look at the continental DWS06...

Nice to know, I've always had good performance out of my previous Michelins on my G8 GXP and Corvette. May have to give the Conti's a look, they make a nice bicycle tire for sure. Now to see where I can source the OZ wheels from, so far the wife likes these. She loves the 21" stock wheels but the lack of an all season tire is killing them for me.

I didn't see your earlier reply on snow usage, but even then, I'd still also recommend the DWS 06. I've run both (although not on the same car), and the DWS 06 perform fine for spirited driving while being far superior in inclement conditions.

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but it appears that Michelin redesigned the AS3 and is now called the AS3 Plus. Its supposed to have 23% more grip in the snow.

Echo. I was very pleased with the all-around performance. And I too love the OZ's. Great choice.

I had these before. Love the look, but they bend easily. Would not buy them again.

Could this possibly due to the lighter weight? Makes me think it must be hard to be as strong as a heavier wheel with more mass.. Maybe?

It's hard to make a general statement given how many variables there are, but with all other things being equal (which they aren't of course) a heavier wheel should be stronger. The reality is there are all kinds of variables starting with the construction method and design. Forged wheels should be lighter and just as strong (if not stronger) when compared to identically sized cast wheels. These OZs appear to be flow formed, so the construction method should make them stronger than straight cast wheels, but they're also lighter which kind of offsets that.

Not to discount Who's Your Daddy?'s experience, but any wheel can bend given the right circumstances. I've seen bent TE37s, and I know those are plenty strong. I think as long as you're going with a reputable manufacturer with an established track record you'll be fine. OZ seems to fall in that category.

I have a set of Leggera's on my Golf R. I also have a set of ultraleggera's on my r32 and for the most part OZ wheels (form flow tech HLT) seem to be holding up pretty well. Living in Chicago you see plenty of wheel bending pot holes and I've bent every type of wheel out there. I've had pot hole hits where I thought the OZ wheel had to be bent but when I've taken to the tire dealer; they didn't find any issues. For me they seem to be holding up ok but I realize every situation is different.

I'm interested in the weight savings. I'm only thinking I'm about 12-13lbs lighter with my HREs, although I haven't actually weighed the stock wheels.

I'm running 20x10 with 295s and I'm coming in around ~52lbs total. I think stock is around 64-65lbs (but that's for the 20"). I should really get the 21"s on the scale

I like OZ's and they are still on my "desired wheel" list in some styles. However, I have seen more bent/cracked OZ wheels in the last 12 years than any other brand, just a heads up to make sure your pothole dodging skills are up to par.

I'll bet the 20's would have way more resistance to bending with the taller sidewall compared to 21's or 22's.

Hey. . .has anyone seen the Niche website lately?
They've got some new forged wheels on there that are sharp!

    Echo Echo'd. :)

DWS are by far the best A/S I've run (had then on 3 different cars)... although the Pzero Nero A/S I am currently running are coming damn close.

Well after talking to the manager of the local Discount Tire I deal with, they cant get the OZ wheel as it is a Tirerack exclusive along with the BBS line as well. They mentioned another brand by Niche which I was able to find a mince comparable wheel. Then went and looked at TSW wheels and found once of their forged wheels. Looking like the TSW Geneva in the matte grey will be the one, along with the Continental DSW06 tires. The TSW wheels are 25lbs per wheel versus the stock 21" wheel of 35, stock tires are 31lbs and the Continental DSW06 are 29lbs.

So looks like a nice 12lb drop per wheel, plan is to order the new setup at the end of summer before the next winter season hits or before we need tires. Currently have 10k miles on the stock Dunlops, I don't see them going much longer than 15k miles or so.

    Hi,
Them OZ look sleek and seem light and quality, but hard to fit them in 21x9-10.
As for TSW, i can vouch theyre awesome: crazy light, Forged, and great designs, all for reasonable $400+(Look on Ebay).
I have the Nurburgring in 21 and enjoying them a lot.
    Cheers,
    Bob

OZ is known to have good quality and the design of Leggera looks great. So get them.

Wish I could, but my contact cant get them since they are a Tire Rack only wheel. I am not about to pay full retail for them either, I get a discount on the tires and wheels thru the local Discount Tire.

Nothing yet, still have around 5-8k miles until the stock tires are done. Once that is the case it will probably be the TSW Geneva in either a 20x9 or 20x10 with 275/40-R20 Conti DSW06 tire.

I've been told the 20x10 Geneva's weigh in at 25.6lbs. That's pretty light.

That's what I was told as well. Should be about 10lb loss on the wheel, then another 2lbs on the tires.
