    Dead on the Hwy

    Hello Guys,

Was just driving on the highway on 5th gear, just cruising and all of a sudden the car turned off, so I had to move to the shoulder and was freaking out. At the point of the incident I didn't know the car turned off, however after I was out of danger I just hit the ignition and the car turned on, without any issues. Wondering what the hell happened? Has anybody experienced this issue?

Maybe LPFP, the in tank pump is on its way out. Put your head next to the gas cap or on the back seat when the car is running and if you hear excesive humming or like an electrical clicking it's the pump

I hover around 3k rpm in 6th on the highway, constantly wishing for a 7th gear. Can't imagine being in 5th.

Ya that is seriously dangerous. I had it happen once after a quick 30mph right turn. Thought it might have been a fuel starvation issue, but the car would not respond to throttle inputs so I stopped and put on hazards. no CEL. Restarted the car and it was back to normal. I called it an automotive TIA. You tuned?

I often cruise in 5th on inner city highways.

OP sounds like a fuel issue. I'd guess pump.

+10 SO MUCH YES. I've got a couple roads I drive regularly that are 45mph limit, and im usually cruising around 50 in 5th gear. Of course, the car says to switch from 4 to 6 at 37mph. But highway speeds of 60+, 6th gear all the way, and when just cruising around 70 really feel the need for another gear to pull. My buddy with the DCT gets about 1-2mpg better than I do, which I attribute to this.

Agree with Sonic, take a listen to the car when running and listen for a hum that doesn't sound right. An old Audi I had used to do this and it was the fuel pump, and the hum was very apparent in the 5 or 10 miles before it crapped out.

There was some traffic, so nothing I could do about that.

Didn't notice anything then, however the radio was on. I have been paying attention at low speeds and nothing yet. I am not tuned yet. Anything else I should be looking for?

Put your ear on the passenger side rear seat while the car is idling and also open the gas cap while car is running and listen in there see if you hear any mechanical humming. You're not gonna hear it while driving. It's not that loud.
