clutch chatter symptom? looking for input on a noise after clutch/flywheel install

so i just installed a single mass flywheel, and stage 1 racing clutch. its my first heavy duty clutch/flywheel set up where ive converted to a single mass flywheel, so i have this noise now and want to make sure its A: normal or if B: i gaffed up something installing it, or C: possible damage from running too long on a bad flywheel.

i walked the flywheel on evenly, torqued it to spec, so i dont think i did anything wrong, i did drive for a few months with a bad flywheel, heavily vibrating at times. so the clutch engages smoothly, no problems shifting, and no vibration, but i have a chatter noise when pressing the gas off idle, sounds similar to a light rod bearing/engine rap, kind of a metallic chatter, no noise at idle or heavy accelerating, mostly notice if cruising light throttle, off the clutch and touching the gas lightly. i know the dmf's absorb gear chatter, i just was hoping someone could confirm what that sounds like. the noise is coming from inside the gearbox, i replaced the gear oil and it didnt change. its a b6 s4

    All Over!

What spec of flywheel did you go with? Steel or aluminium?

Drivetrain rattle is inevitable in any transmission, the severity will depend on how the preloads were set, and how much backlash there is between the individual gear sets. The rattle and chatter is always there. A great damping medium is the flywheel and crank pulley.

The more weight the flywheel has, the more sound absorption it offers. The factory DM flywheel will absorb the most transmission input shaft rattle. Going a bit lighter may also damp the rattle. Once you start shedding more weight from your flywheel, the chatter from the transmission will increase (less damping from the flywheel).

You can go single mass without losing too much weight.

How severe it is will depend on how light your chosen flywheel is. Is it damaging? No. Annoying? Definitely. It all boils down to what you could put up with, and how you drive the car. Personally, I couldn't tolerate that annoying rattle from a luxury sedan or wagon for the street, it would really bug the hell out of me. A stripped-out race car, no worries.

    It's your call, buddy.
