    Dsg clutch slipping

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2012 s4 dsg with 79000 miles on it and about awhile back I got a code for clutch pressure to high. So I put on the rack checked fluid level it was good so I went ahead and pulled pan and did a service on it was all good till now. Yesterday I was driving and it started slipping under load on freeway In 7th gear so I shifted to 6th and no slip. Checked codes and got clutch 1 excessive slippage. Has anyone replaced there clutches and does Audi sell them separately I kno ssp has a set. Just trying to decide if I should replace trans or try ssp clutches or do stock clothes if available! Thanks!

Did a log with vcds this morning and when it starts slipping the pressure is at 15bar and clutch 2 goes to 13bar is that where they are supposed to be?

Shit that's the first I've heard of dsg clutches slipping...I thought a company was selling a clutch upgrade that was good for 1000wtq. I think you'd be better off (cost wise) going with aftermarket vs oem, but check to be certain. Don't think there's a need to replace whole tranny brotha. Keep this thread updated with what happens. Good Luck!

I'd look into the pressure code further first. Really hard to imagine you've burnt out a clutch pack, ESPECIALLY at only 79k, but I guess anything is possible. There are DSG cars with hundreds of launches (and others with more than double your mileage) and I've never heard of any issues.

Maybe a DSG tune would fix the problem?

You should 'never' be under load in 6th or 7th gear.. Your putting a ton of stress on that clutch pack.

And also the pressure code has not came back since I did the service on it. Just keeps coming back with code for clutch 1 slipping it could only be 2 things the clutches or mechatronics is think. And it only had 20 launches on the trans.

I'm gonna install clutches myself since I have my own lift at my shop. They looks pretty easy to do after looking through the repair manual. Just pull the trans and pull the front plate off trans then they are right there. And ya I haven't heard much about them slipping. But I always felt like they were getting worse like on the freeway it would feel like they were slipping when I was pushing it hard

Any of the clutch packages will work just fine....600ft/lb package is more than sufficient as there never has, nor ever will be a s4 that makes more than +/-450wtq. Good luck brotha!

I'd be curious to know if starting off from a stop may have some shudder due to a more grabby disk, wot shifting and launches

When I changed the clutch packs to Alta reds in my caddy (1000ft/lb rated), there was a noticeable difference in shifts! It was quicker/grabbier than oem, never shuddered from a stop and almost gave it a dsg fart. Good shit!

Yesterday I pulled trans out and pulled clutch pack out and found the k1 clutch smoked. All the steel plates in the k1 clutch were black and the middle steel plate was warped. The k2 clutch had a little wear but for the most parts was pretty clean. So I installed the new ssp clutches after I soaked the discs in fluid for a hour and put the trans back in and changed the filters. When I pulled the side filter on the outside of trans it was black with metal. I also pulled the mechatronics and cleaned on the black debris off of it. Filled it and brought it up to temp and topped fluid off. Then they recommend a clutch adaptation so I did that and took it for a test drive. It shifts like it was brand new cant even tell a difference in the aftermarket clutches compared to the oem ones! Gonna drive it for a week and then get the apr tcu flash!

I don't know about the aftermarket clutch packs and their HP ratings but according to this (take it with a grain of salt) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-shift_gearbox - the DL501 will take up to 650 ft/lbs.. The aftermarket stuff can't be bad but I would only do this if I had a nuked tranny like the OP did.

Ya only reason I did it was because mine were bad otherwise I would have never touched the trans

When the tranny goes on my 2015 after however many miles, is this going to essentially return it to stock (or better) performance? I'm thinking about long term ownership and what major repairs to expect if I want to run the car into the ground.

I've got to call BS on this after having removed the trans from my S5 cab. There is absolutely no way you could remove that transmission from an S4/S5 in 2 hours. Between getting the cats off and accessing some of the bolts, it takes a fair bit of time to drop these transmissions. I agree its not hard just time consuming and sometimes requires 3 hands.

I was thinking the same thing. And 6 hours total? You're also dealing with the driveshaft, cooler lines, draining fluid, taking apart clutch, reassembling clutch. And you'd be crazy not to replace the teflon seals, orings, various seals, pressure pipes, maybe a solenoid or two...
