Post Need the community's opinion about this stupid issue (fuel related?)

A customer was basically driving on empty, car started shuddering due to lack of fuel (gauge was on empty). Said individual stopped on highway, started car again, got it to run -- drove to nearest gas station with CEL blinking like crazy. Filled up vehicle with gas - now the poor Audi has some deep whining or some noise from the rear and the car is shaking. So the vehicle is currently off my hands but I'm thinking the car was misfiring due to lean condition and probably pinging like crazy. Don't know why this person didn't just stay there and have some gas delivered. Well anyway I'm going to check for codes and do some logging for the duty cycle on the pump as it is said the car can still run. It's probably burnt. Any other stories like this one? Anyone ever had a pump burn out on them while driving with a full fuel tank? I will post back later and keep this thread updated. Thanks for looking.

It is never a good idea to run on a low tank for two reasons. One, the fuel cools the pump. Two, you now will suck up more debris. Your fuel pump filter and feed line filter will catch this stuff, but now the probability of them being clogged is more present.

I would start on gas starvation due to the pump or filter. If the car runs, get fuel pressures at the rail while it runs and go from there. Most likely it is inadequate, causing the issues.

Edit: Energise the pump and check pressure at the rail before doing anything. It will answer a lot of questions before having to start the car again, which may complicate or create an issue.

The fuel pump duty cycle is 100 percent.

Since the fuel pressure regulator is built into the fuel filter the first thing I would do would be to replace the fuel filter.
