Lot of paper towel! Wrap it around before you begin to screw open the oil filter

I put a towel down besides it when I take it out. Also I drain as much as possible before I remove it. Little to no mess.

I figured that's how I'd do it, but wondered how messy it is.

Do you unscrew the filter till the seal is broken, then let it sit so that oil in the lower housing can drain (not sure it has anywhere to drain, other than all over the back of the engine), or do you just unscrew it all the way and remove, without waiting?

Drain the pan first. I've never had a problem with oil from the filter.

Yes. I wrap a few paper towels about the oil filter canister then unscrew and raise the filter up slightly to allow residual oil to flow into the pan. Next I remove the oil from the pan using my MityVac oil evacuation tool. While this is going on, I carefully remove the oil filter while having an aluminum rectangular pound cake pan ready to accept it. After the MityVac has done its job, I insert the new filter and torque down the canister top, then pour in the requisite amount of oil and I'm done.

There is no mess with the filter removal using this method... at least for me, there isn't.

When I've changed the oil on this car, I have left the filter on while extracting the oil. I use an oil extractor to pump the oil out from the top which takes ~20 minutes, so most of the residual oil in the filter housing area drains back into the engine during that time. Before removing the filter, I stuff some shop towels below the filter housing and slowly withdraw the filter from the housing. As soon as the filter element itself starts to emerge from the housing, I cradle it with towels to prevent any oil from dripping down into the engine bay.

For whatever it's worth, I also use my extractor to suck up any residual oil that is sitting in the bottom of the filter housing.

+1 I use the same method as well, no issues.

I don't see why you need to leave the filter housing loose and allow it to leak all over. Just drain the oil with the oil cap open. Then unscrew the filter and pull it right out and flip it up why pulling it out to avoid any drips. I e done this several times with not a single drop let alone a mess. Leaving it "cracked" open is sure to cause a mess.

I use the extractor that ECS sells. Works great and I'm pretty sure its the same one Griot's sells, but at a better price.

Yes I do this, too. I left this little step out with my explanation... thanks for mentioning it.

I don't loosen the filter housing. That would be a mess and is not necessary at all.

This is what I do, basically.

What I wrote worked super for me. No dripping, no mess to clean up, and no oil running down the side of the oil canister. Oh, and the filter doesn't screw into the canister bottom as there are no threads on the filter.

Loosen the filter. Once the filter is loose, a drain back valve opens in the filter housing. Give it a minute to drain, then remove the filter and cap.

    Yes, this.
