    let's talk custom coolant tanks

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello az,

I'm in the process of making a couple of custom tanks for my racecar and dd and had a couple questions.
Has anyone ever made their own?
Also looking to learn at what pressure the coolant cap was designed to open at?

If anyone has any info or has tackled this before please help me compile what is known here for others who may want to learn and save some time.

    TIA

I saw one before on here. Can't remember if it was an A4 or S4 though. Looked like a nice unit

I've used tanks made for other applications that have dimensions similar to what I needed. Worked out great

Coolant pressure caps usually open at 12 or 14 psi.

how will the cluster alert you since there is no more coolant tank sensor hooked up? i would think the low coolant light would stay on since it's no longet connected. maybe a resistor in the sensor wires?

The water is what connects the circuit. If you just bridge the wires it tricks the cluster into thinking there is still a circuit.

There was a guy that made a few batches. He did try to sell or did sell a few too. Im sure a search would net the results.

In case anyone is interested, i'm going to make a run of five or so coolant tanks in the stock location over the summer after I see how this one works. They will use the stock check valve from your original cap and will have a drain petcock as well as a pressure gauge. I'm also looking into doing a power steering reservoir, if anyone has any interest in something like this please discuss or hmu.

You are correct, I just wanted to illustrate the components and how they all look welded up. I'll update when i make the one on the driver's side of the engine as soon as I get it finished

we discussed a sight glass but there is a mark inside the tank under the cap. will be using the low level sensor as well

Pardon my ignorance, but why is this necessary? Is it simply the fact that you're expecting/allowing it to run hotter than you'd comfortably trust the OEM reservoir to handle?

    Beautiful fab work for sure.

plastic will break eventually from heat. I've seen so many track cars days ended just from breaking coolant res

I'm down. For the power steering res. it would be
cool to build a set of high pressure line for a PS
    cooler.

you should fab up a way to be able to see how full it is. like the gauge idea a lot. if it had like a site glass or something i'd be in.

    something like this.

only because i'd like to know before the light comes on that I'm low on coolant, most times I'm low I'm not at home...

Honestly a sight glass is really unnecessary. Just check it periodically. Your vehicle should not be consuming coolant, if it goes low you have an issue.

yeah honestly. your right but for people who don't want to idk pull the whole car apart every time something is wrong, while you could instead add some coolant here and there. seems like a small bung and a 5 dollar glass is barely something to snub as far as one less step to actually make sure everything is fine. b5 is hard enough. make it easier.

cinesnow, maybe you could make one up for my c4. my tank is grossss

+1 for a quick way to see the level. Its nice to in a quick glance confirm that things are as they should be. I dont always like relying on electronics to tell me when trouble is afoot.
