    Whistling noise under light acceleration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have developed a whistling noise under light acceleration. I first noticed it a few months ago but it was quiet enough that i didn't really look into it. Fast forward to a few days ago and I just installed the ECS Tuning Luft-Technik intake system and it has become much more noticeable with the open element filter.

I have searched but nothing really seems to match up quite with what I am experiencing.

    It happens:

    - In every gear
    - Only when my boost gauge reads between 10 in/hg and 3psi (above or below that it doesn't make the noise)
    - It is not RPM dependent. As long as I am in the vacuum/boost range I said above, it makes the same noise regardless of RPM
    - Makes the noise in both stock mode and 91oct
    - My best description of the sound would be a tea kettle right as it starts to boil/whistle

The car in question is a 2011 2.0T quattro with APR stage 1, ECS luft-technik intake. My first though was a bad DV? or maybe a bad PCV? I had a DV go out on my FSI VW GTI but it didn't sound like this.

    Thanks in advance.

It is hard to capture it on video, this was the best one that I can get. It's much louder in person. I will try and get a better video later today.

***5/8 update*** It was not the DV. Swapped it out with a new one just for curiosity, still had the same issue.

I'm scratching my head at this point. It doesn't make the noise just putting around or cruising, doesn't make it under full boost/load. Just seems like intermediate boost/load causes the noise. I get the typical "whooshing/sucking" sound you get from a turbo'd car with an open filter intake, BUT on top of that sound there is a high pitched whistling/screeching sound that sounds terrible.

No CEL or any codes of that matter.

Ok, so I ran a few test/swapped out intake components and the problem is definitely post intake system.

    So far what I know:
    1. Only happens under moderate engine load/boost range.
    2. No CELs or performance issues
    3. Not caused by the intake system
    4. Not the DV
    5. No visible damage to any intercooler pipes

    5/30 Update:

I have replaced the PCV valve, replaced the remainder of the PCV system with the ECS tuning catch can system.

    Here is another video:

I'm running out of ideas on this one, any input would be awesome guys.

you could try the turbo muffler delete? from what i understand B8s have a strange piece on the turbo to restrict turbo noise so you pretty much cant hear anything on a stock setup, but when you open it up (K&N, APR Carbonio, ECS Luft Teknik, etc) there is strange whislting at light throttle/cruising. Could be causing your whistle? Would love to hear if the muffler delete solves the issue...

Turbo muffler delete does not solve the noise. Just went through that.

From my experience the whistling does not go away but turbo muffler delete does add a better more throaty sound

Hmmm I can't see the turbo muffler delete mentioned anywhere above, just troubleshooting the DV and PCV? Or do you mean that you've just installed one and it didnt help?

Hey sorry for the delay. Yea the whistling sound is just a TFSI noise that is magnified with a cold air intake. The stock airbox muffles the sound from the factory. The turbo muffler delete was a thought as to solve the light accel whistling, unfortunately it did not go away at all. Its not specific to cold air intake brands as far as the noise, its the turbo.

    Whistling noise under light acceleration

Ive had an intake for 3 months now, so far ive modded revision D diverter valve with Go fast bits DV+, and even turbo muffler delete...i think the only solution for the whistle is K04 or GT28, or just not the stock K03 unless anyone has solved the B8 whistle (besides re-installing stock airbox)

Appreciate the effort you've put into diagnosing the issue. It would be great if a workshop could put in the time to pull it apart piece by piece until the culprit is discovered, theres just got to be something causing the weirdness! >_<

This has been for all known B8 aftermarket cold air intakes from what Ive read. Shop car at my work and my car both identical noise. Woth the stock airbox the noise goes away (or is muffled). Its just a B8 annoyance.

This is just a normal thing that happens with some B8s unfortunately. Stock air box muffles this sound so anything other than the stock airbox will make it very noticeable. Only replacing the turbo will get rid of it as the issue is due to a improperly sealing internal wastegate

I’m having the same problem, although I don’t have a turbo. My car is just the 3.0 and it makes the same whining noise. Lately it’s been getting louder. Any thoughts?

Hello guys! I have the same issue with my Audi A4 B8 2015 but the sound only happens when stepping on the accelerator pedal on low RPMs. Linking the video below. It started to happen after my turbo core replacement, so not sure if it's about some hoses purely installed or the actual turbo. Did you resolve the issue?

Have you inspected your turbo manifold for cracks? Are you holding boost?
