That list really does not mean much. They have absolute sh*t oils on that list, while the higher end ones won't even be on there (ie Amsoil). Reason being, these oil companies pay to be on that list. But who cares about that when we can throw some of that Grade A Quaker State into our cars!
And here is the latest list, which lists a whole bunch of other diesel engine oils:

Why is Rotella T6 not on there? Possibly to not compete with themselves when they have other oils on the list. Just a guess, but this is the marketing and business world where the all mighty dollar is their best interest and the consumer is only of their interest because we (general public) have their money. Nice way to dump off oils that don't sell as much, if you ask me (just looked on the "approved" list and their most expensive stuff is on that list. demographic of today's Audi owner vs yesterday's Audi owner is like apples to grapes. I see things just a bit differently). Rotella T6 sells on many platforms, just as Amsoil is found in the engines of people who know quality oil (ie those cars you see racing on Speed channel). No need to market what sells themselves, when marketing costs money.
And then you need to ask why has the Audi approved list changed so much over the years? Maybe did they lose enough money on recalls and class action suits due to approving crappy motor oils people ran because it was on their "approved" list, yet cheap and sh*t? Who knows!?!?
Either way, choose what motor oil you want. But at least have a credible reasoning as to why you won't run it when many facts remain vs saying because it isn't on the Audi approved list. That is like me saying I won't go 35mph in a 30mph speed limit zone because it isn't approved by the law.
