My 2010 w 59k miles running close to hot 3/4 temp and fans whining

    Hi guys,
Been a while since I've posted on here...
I've got a car that has never run anything warmer than 1/2 (on guage) temperature and all the sudden it's pegging at 3/4 on my oil temp guage - I have since stopped driving it. It will hold perfect temp for ten minutes and then shoot up to 3/4. No codes no CELs. When I kill the engine the fans are whining loudly and the aux fan will continue turning for another 30 seconds.

I have read a little about faulty thermostats and water pumps, so my thinking is that I should just go ahead and change both. My question: should I get parts and gaskets from Audi or aftermarket? What operating temp thermostat should I be getting? I know for the water pump to get the upgraded one with the metal prop.

Also, I just emergency ordered a VAGCOM cable just so I can get the proper engine oil temp reading - to rule out a faulty temperature sensor.

I have enough mechanical ability and friends in the business not to take this to dealer/German car repair shop and do it over the weekend. I just want to make the right decisions going forward.

    Thanks,
    Matt in Louisiana

Do you mean your coolant gauge? Oil temp is only shown in MMI with lap timer enabled.

It sounds exactly like the many descriptions of t-stat problems that i've read on here. Since you have the ability and time to do it it seems to me like you might as well do the water pump while you're at it but it's probably not necessary.

T stat is failed. Don't drive and replace it ASAP. Very common issue.

I just had my check engine light appear today...scanned it and said it was cooling performance system fault. The odd thing is that my temp needle didn't even reach half the operating temp. Am I the first and only one that has a stuck open thermostat?

I would hazard a guess and say your water pump was replaced early on from the recall so its fine. You really only need to change the thermostat to the updated version.

This will fail and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Replace the t stat asap. If you are experiencing any type of oil consumption, you might want to replace or repair the PCV valve while the SC is off.

Well crap I have already ordered a new water pump. My thinking is - if I'm going into the top of the engine and I'm already there I might as well change it. Better safe than sorry and open it up to find a missing blade on the propeller of the water pump.

How much is the PCV? Is it a ticking time bomb? Like are there any chances it won't go bad?
