Valve cover removal problem Please help

Im trying to repair my head gasket leak on a on a tsi engine and i am worried if i did something wrong, as my cams are looking weird. let me explain what i did:

1-I removed my timing chain cover from the left side -
2-i removed all the bolts on top of the valve cover and i notice that the cover was not moving.
3-then i removed the vacuum pump from the right side and as soon i removed it the cover jumped a tiny inch up.
4-then i just lifted up the cover and it came right off
    BUT
5- when i removed the cover, both my cams look like they are elevated from the right side, what i mean by that is that they do not seat perfectly down on the engine.

My question is did i damage my cams by not removing the timing chain?
are the cams supposed to go up a bit when you remove the valve cover?
Can i just install the valve cover back on and hope that the cover will push them back in place?

I am very worried, and i would highly appreciate your help

i will post pics for further understanding

    Thank you
