Valve cover removal problem Please help

Im trying to repair my head gasket leak on a on a tsi engine and i am worried if i did something wrong, as my cams are looking weird. let me explain what i did:

1-I removed my timing chain cover from the left side -
2-i removed all the bolts on top of the valve cover and i notice that the cover was not moving.
3-then i removed the vacuum pump from the right side and as soon i removed it the cover jumped a tiny inch up.
4-then i just lifted up the cover and it came right off
    BUT
5- when i removed the cover, both my cams look like they are elevated from the right side, what i mean by that is that they do not seat perfectly down on the engine.

My question is did i damage my cams by not removing the timing chain?
are the cams supposed to go up a bit when you remove the valve cover?
Can i just install the valve cover back on and hope that the cover will push them back in place?

I am very worried, and i would highly appreciate your help

i will post pics for further understanding

    Thank you

working in the backyard under a tree with an intense wind, I don't want leafs, dust, or any debri or anything else to fall in. Do you know why the cam is lifted on the right side?

I’m working on the same thing and saw that we have similar problems. Did you ever get a solution?

I found this thread as I will soon need to redo the gasket on my cover. From what I have read it seem the cover actually holds the cams in place as well. So if this is true, the pressure of the valves and the tension of the cam chain is causing the cams to lift on one side. Even though it's not ideal, it shouldn't be an issue as long as the cams / chain doesn't slip a tooth

So happen to have same situation. We’re you able to push cams back down with the installation of the valve cover?
