    Headlight/foglight bulbs...what's everyone running?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Was considering upgrading, for more light, the oem HIDs just aren't that great.

If you've changed them out, what side you go with for head lights and or fog lights?

I went with Philips XV50 for hids and Philips ultinon LED for fogs. Pretty bright combo even in NYC lighting

OEM HID with LED's set to 100% via VCDS
ijdmtoy 3000k LED fogs. (I had Hoen's before and the LED's are much brighter and a much more vibrant yellow)

Here's my review of them, had them about 10 months with no problems/dimming/fading.

Ah yes I also have the 100% brightness on DRL's via VCDS. Just did it a few days ago haha I forgot all about it.

Question about that, do you think this would wear down the longevity of the headlamps LED DRL's because we upped to 100% all the time?(well that's what I did) should I be worried down the road that the led's may go out sooner than later?

I'll look into those 3000k led fogs actually, thanks for that

Why are you guys running the factory LED at 100%? Looks horrible and its super bright blinding other people. I had it set like that for one day and changed it right back.

Noticeably brighter... especially with the LED fogs. I'm sure I'm blinding people with those out in the country.

Please change your settings back. It does look terrible. The LED's are set to 100% during the day, then they dim down to like 26% when your headlights are on. By changing it to 100% your leds don't dim anymore when the headlights come on. It looks trashy and ricer from a distance.

VX3 (discontinued but they have a newer generation) LED: http://www.vleds.com/vx3-h3.html

Both are fantastic and 5000k temps match perfectly. The fogs are bright and really help with peripheral vision at night. I always worry about animals running out into traffic at highway speed and the bright fogs help immensely with view. I can clearly see across a 3 lane highway at night from tree line to tree line. No one flashes me for bright lights either so its a win-win.

This is my exact reason for wanting different bulbs. Are both links u sent for fog lights only?

Did you notice a significant improvement using the Osram Xenarc CBI HID bulbs versus stock? I find the stock light output to be bright, but not nearly as "white" as I would expect or prefer from an HID bulb.

EDIT- The description "cool blue intense" is making me think these are going to be on the blue side of white, i.e. ricer.

Sorry Steve, I have these and they match damn near perfect together. Im not a fan of the blue either. There is a thread from HID Concept that has pics to see the difference. These are brighter then stock.

Cool, thanks for the input and the link. I may have to give these a try. $210 for a set is spendy, but in the long run I think I would find it worthwhile.

No problem, you can get them cheaper when they have a better sale then the one thats going on now if you can hold out. You can sell your stock ones to to recoup some of it. Sold mine for 95$ after I put the new ones in.

I have run the Osram bulbs in my last car too but the specs were slightly different 5500k in a D2S form vs. 5000k in D3S. That being said, I do not notice a blue light output at all (you really need to go 6000k temp or higher to get blue IMHO). The Lumen rating on the Osram is also higher than stock or at least comparable because usually when you go go with a higher Kelvin temp the amount of lumens decreases but not with the Osram. There are many people across many brands running the Osram bulbs with great success. Many people consider them to be the best bulb around (hence the price) and are also made in Germany FWIW. Personally after using the Osram and seeing some people dislike the Phillips bulbs on this platform, that is what made me choose to go with the Osram on my B8.5.

They are not cheap bulbs but have been reliable (ran my last ones for 60k miles over 3 years no issues). They are also supposed to be pretty color stable which means the output light doesn't change much with age.

As far as being an upgrade over stock, I did my fog bulbs first and could not stand the yellowish tinge of the HIDs and found that the whiter light of the fogs easily overpowered them, now with the 5000k HID bulbs the light is much more uniform which in itself helps visibility IMHO. That being said i knew what I was getting into before hand and had lowered my expectations a BIT because of other people's complaints (and rightly so) about the quality of the projector lens on these cars. They don't have as great of a cutoff line as other cars and supposedly arn't as clear which hinder light output some.

Edit: I can try to take a picture of the light output now if you want but it is hard to take accurate pictures of lights

just my 2c.... I went with the philips x-treme from HIDconcept, and regret it. They are a touch whiter, but they are not brighter. If your bulbs work, then i'd just wait till they die then replace them. For the money I dont find it a good upgrade. If you want better light, spend the money and contact lightwerks about getting a better protector, lens, ballast, and bulb package. I'm going to do that this summer.

That's disappointing to read. I was getting all geared up to buy a set based on various good reviews I read (both on here and on HIDConcept).

So the link you provided for the "H3 bulb" fits facelift cars? I can't find this bulb in H8 on their website.

It's not 50% brighter as advertised, but I changed one bulb to compare the difference and it was for sure brighter than the stock bulbs.
Even though my stocks are over 5 years old, I noticed a difference . The cutoff on US projectors are complete shit though I'll agree with that.

For anyone who is looking and deciding on cbi or xv , this is a good discussion. Post #5 has a good comparison between the two, cutoff and hotspot.

http://www.vleds.com/bulb-type/fog-l...8/h11-lmz.html these are the new version of the ones I bought but other than that I can't speak to them but they are rated at 3000 lumens vs the old 2800. The old ones that would have fit are here: http://www.vleds.com/h11-vx3-6k.html but are discontinued. The ones I linked originally i do not think would fit.

What do you think of fanless vs LEDs with Fans?

Just also keep in mind, sadly we cant have a beautiful cutoff like the pics in the link due to the projectors/lenses we have.

I don't have any experience with the LEDs with fans, but i'm not convinced its needed for the fogs because its not as enclosed. I'd be interested to hear from people who have used lights with fans.

This first one is just the Osram CBI bulbs the night I installed them.

This one is the Osram CBI and the V3X LED fogs at the same time.

This pic doesn't quite capture the added width from the fogs but does show how well the colors match and create a seamless "view". The LED fogs do throw a good amount of light to the sides of the car for the b8.5 (can't speak for b8s but i'm sure it would for those too).

This pic is just the LED fogs.

No they are not. B8.5 is h8 and b8 is h11. Don't make the mistake of ordering B8 fog lights by mistake like I did :banghead:

Also - what's the deal with all of your posts ending with the whole double thumb thing (I'm assuming that you're using tapatalk?), it's kind of distracting since it's in your posts vs being a signature - no judgment, just saying

you are not the one that spent the money. Even on the discount they were offering I feel I paid too much.

I'll concede that there "may" be a slight improvement over stock when just aiming at a wall. When driving, and the terrain changes texture, color, and slope, the benefits that there might have been on the wall are gone. Even if there is a benefit in normal driving, there is no way you'd convince me it's worth the money to "upgrade" to the X-treme. Like I said before, if your stock bulbs died, sure I'd give these a go, but to replace working bulbs with the x-treme id a wasted expenditure. I do partially believe that the root cause is our garbage projectors and lenses. In the link you posted the pictures that showed the nice display are using the RX350BX projectors which are far and away a better option than what we have. So i'll leave it at this. the X-treme may indeed be an upgrade, but not in our oem housings.
