Hey guys just wondering if I can get some
Input. I'm looking to get around 400awhp on my 2001 1.8t awm build and I was wondering what you guys have put in for the bottom end previously; ie, rods, bearings, Pistons, rings. Any input would be great thanks

You really only need rods and pistons for the bottom end build for 400 hp.

    You don't even need pistons

Word, didn't know that. I thought only the stock AEB pistons could handle that.

I'm saying you need to get your parts right. Inconel valves will be solid, not sodium filled. And I highly doubt there are any titanium seats available because titanium is most likely too hard for a seat.

Like I said, spend the next couple weeks reading and digesting build threads and you will start to have a better picture of what is needed. If you have questions after that, come back.

All stock pistons are forged Mahle's. Only difference is that AEB pistons have 20mm wrist pins, AWM has 19mm. That 1mm difference will not make or break your build at all.

Thanks! I didn't know that. I was always under the impression only the AEB were forged pistons.

If I have an awm engine is it the 06a block? It's a 2001 and I've been trying to figure it out but all I'm getting is either 058 or 06a. Care to clarify ? Thanks!

The 058 block has an external coolant pump and the 06A has a timing belt driven coolant pump, that is the easiest way to tell the two apart. The cars with the 06A blocks have the best engine management for tuning and even though the 06A has smaller wrist pins they can make more power. Even the small port head is good unless you are moving a lot of air and can make your goal with simple upgrades. Researching is a great place to start because people have been tuning these motors for a long time so there is a lot of information out there. 400 AWHP cars are not always the easiest to drive in stop and go traffic so if this is your daily you may want to think about it. My car may be around 300 AWHP and nothing really starts to happen until around 3,000 rpm and it has a clutch that can handle the power so it is like a switch and can be a real pain to drive slowly. Once it is in boost it is all forgotten but out of boost can be a pain in traffic. You can get close to your mark with a good turbo/manifold, injectors, bigger intake system & intercooler, bigger exhaust, rods, and software so it is not hard to do. When you are replacing pistons, porting, cams, and solid valves you are really squeezing the hard to get power out of it which is really going to cost. Obviously start out with a motor that is in good shape and rebuild whatever needs rebuilding. When I put rods in mine the bores were all within spec so I just cleaned everything up and honed the block at home and then put new rings in it and didn't touch the top end. Once you have seen what other people have done to hit your mark you will have a much better idea what you want to invest in and get it done.
