    Should i get back in a S4?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i had a 2010 s4 for about a year when some lady ran me of the road and it was totaled. I got a 2011 q7 prestige and while its nice for my family and having a tow hitch, space etc, I'm really debating trading it in for this 2012 S4. Does this price seem fair for the miles?

    http://www.audibellingham.com/used/A...272cfbf2ee.htm

The q7 will fit my whole family, the s4 will leave one person out. I can put my bike rack on q7 tow hitch. S4 will be way more fun to drive, mod...ill spend a lot more money on modding the s4, but save a little on gas money. Its pretty much identical cars on the interior features. q7 has 99xxx miles. 30k less miles on the s4. Im pretty torn right now. clearly posting here you will all say get the s4, but im looking for reasons to not get it since its really not ideal for me besides the fact that i want it and itll be more fun to drive.

Only you can decide which car is best.
FWIW I would not buy such a high mileage S4... I bought my last A4 with 60k and was a mistake... never will I do that again.
    Price seems fair.

I've gotten both my cars at Car Max.

In August 2015, I bought a 2012 Q7 Premium Plus with 24k miles on it for $37,998. 1 owner and still under warranty (at the time). I just bought another warranty since I was passing the 4 year mark in March 2016.

I also bought a 14 S4 Premium Plus with 16k miles for $42,998. 1 owner and under warranty.

Neither have been in an accident.

    Those prices seem steep IMO.

Doesn't sound like you really want it to work for you. How about an SQ5?

To answer your question. I have a wife and son. By we take road trips often so the extra space is nice. So is having space when we go places with friends.

    My S4 is my DD.

So I guess it depends on what you guys do as a family, how often everyone will be in 1 car, etc. Family first. So if a car is preventing that, you should really rethink it.

    Just my 2 pennies.

fwiw, cars in the PNW generally are more expensive than anywhere else in the country. my q7 and s4 i previously bought them both from colorado cause it was way cheaper. consider i have almost 100k miles on my q7, 70k miles is a lot less. nearly 2 more years of driving less. sq5 is also too small though, i would just get an s4 if i was getting the sq5. my other option is to just get a cheap honda pilot after getting back in an s4.

My experience was not so jolly... it all depends on how the car was cared for by the previous owner(s)... which is a gamble... the higher the miles the bigger the gamble...

    I don't understand this statement...
So without having the 3rd row, the entire family cannot drive with you? If you have 6 people in the family the S4 won't work unless it is a second car. In which case I would still get the S4 and grab a Honda Odyssey or something more practical.

Otherwise I would get the S4...get a bike rack on the S4, no problem. Maybe can't tow a boat or really anything with the S4, but well...

Agreed, I think there are a lot of factors involved. Had an A4 3.2 that I sold at 111k with no issues other than worn out bushings and replacing valve cover gaskets. The Q5 has 91k racked on it, hasn't needed any repairs since I've owned it. One of my siblings, however, has a B8 2.0 that's constantly at the service center in the 1.5 years she's had it since 63k.

If going the S4 route at this price, consider one with the sport differential. Maybe Bang & Olufsen sound if that matters to you. Is this a Prestige package?

this car has sports diff, also heard the 2012 DSGs are not bad. it was the 2010 and some 2011 that had the issues. my old 2010 had the problem with dsg..i forgot what the part exactly was.

and rudy, yes we have a family of 6, which one of them is going to college in just two more years and just getting her license now as well. i like the plan of getting the other car as the full family car so i am also looking at cheap honda pilots. i did have thoughts of a boat, but its just not justifiable to purchase one to use for only 2 months of the year in the PNW.

70k miles on DSG and sports diff? No. Freaking. Way.

Honestly, those two parts are NOT bulletproof and very expensive to fix. I would not buy that car as a daily driver without having $5k+ specifically set aside for repairs.

I would either bump up the budget for a lower-mileage S4, or look for other cars. You can pick up a brand-new Golf R for ~$37k.

I think that price is fairly high of the amount of miles. If you do end up getting that S4 you have some room to haggle the price down. Because I just got a 2013 S4 with 63k miles for $29,000

thanks for all the input. as mentioned, everything is more expensive in the PNW. either way, i think im going to pass on this for now and just keep the q7 for a few more years. or might just pick up an b5 s4 for some fun driving, maybe even a 335

For reference, I picked up a 2013 S4 with MMI, sports diff, B&O, carbon inlays, clear bra, weathertech mats, Stasis tune and suspension with <14k miles on it for 39k.

Not CPO but previous owner had the extended warranty and care plan that transferred over.

There were similar cars around for ~$35k although none of them where as clean or well cared for.

This was in Portland however, PNW all the same. (No sales tax down here though )

I feel your pain. Everyone seems to want your first born here. Yet they sit on the lot for a LONG time. I actually inquired about this car but was turned off by the fact it did not have the sport diff. I think this one has been for sale since January.

I asked if it had a sports diff and he replied with the options it had. So didn't explicitly say no, but the option wasn't listed.

More fuel to the fire. Larson wanted 39999 for a 2013 prestige dsg with around 40k miles and an accident.

I ended up getting a cpo 2013 prestige with sports diff, b+o, Audi key, nav, radar cruise control, and 48k miles for 35k. I feel like overpaid but I had been looking since January and got tired of looking.

I would say no, you should not "get back in an S4". Definitely not a B8 that is out of warranty.

Trading in the Q7 on a low mile Pilot makes a lot of sense.
A Q7 with 100k miles sounds like a big-$-repair time bomb to me.

try cargurus.com and search for your area...it gives you a "great, good, fair, poor" deal along with the price.

That car you're looking at is way overpriced. Should be around $24k

Last piece of advice. I've purchased a dozen cars this way.

Since car prices are largely regional, expand your searches to include a much larger circle. I purchased a 2009 M3 a few years ago, bought it from a dealership in Colorado and paid $660 to freight it to Tampa, Florida. It was, by far, the best deal. I paid $45,000 for it, had 17,000 miles, and I sold it 2.5 years later for $38,000.

cargurus is a great site, that I mentioned in my previous post. It does the work for you. expand your search to at least 500 miles, but also, for fun, check out the entire US. My 2013 S4 had 29,000 miles, premium plus Quattro, and it was listed as a "GREAT deal" for $31,900'ish. The blue book "trade in" value was $33,500...

the car you showed should be priced at $29,900 IF it had 30,000 miles on it. With those miles, again...way overpriced. Broaden your search. Worst case, you pay for freight...or, you fly to pick it up, and drive back.

Why buy new? You realize, for $37k, you can get a LOT more car than ever buying new. Why not go with a low-mileage C63 AMG for $40k? They depreciate 30k in 3 years.

Out of curiosity I looked and the car he linked to is listed as a "fair deal" on car gurus. (Link)

Doesn't really matter though as I think the OP has opted to pass up an S4 for now.

Yeah...Fair deal isn't fair at all. It's either Great, or nothing, for me. You'd be surprised at the differences these dealers are asking...because a guy won't spend $119 on a one-way trip and drive it back. I'm not talking about a $500 either. $2k-$5k differences.

Yeah, as the OP mentioned these and subarus are grossly inflated in the PNW.

Even expanding the search to 500 miles still yields nothing great(or even good for that matter)

Right...500 miles is still the PNW for the most part. My S4's previous owner was a retired surgeon, one-owner, living in Sarasota, FL who wanted an M6.

Mine was $4600 off of whatever they're listing for a baseline. Fair deals are typically where they start.

Maybe it's not worth it. To each their own. It's a good site that at least gives you some regional information without thinking too much about it.

Freight across the entire country is probably $1k.

Again, FWIW. Looks like the OP changed his mind towards it anyway (more than likely due to the admitted excessive prices on these and Subaru's).

You can certainly get "more" car for $37k, but it will likely be out of warranty and more expensive to repair. Also, the Golf R has been holding its value well because its production is relatively limited.

Hell, you want the best bang for the buck out there right now, go look at a '12/'13 CPO 991.1 C2S. You can pick one up for basically half off MSRP with a warranty, and the depreciation curve has flattened dramatically.

warranties are nice...purchased my M3 warranty for $2500, but saved $30k by buying pre-owned.

    991 C2S is a good choice!

good luck! my S4 was priced less than the trade-in, clean version...putting an equivalent deal at $25,000, near my estimate from earlier. Regionally, it only adds $350 to Washington state. There should be a nice profit at $28k for them

Im pretty torn right now. clearly posting here you will all say get the s4, but im looking for reasons to not get it since its really not ideal for me besides the fact that i want it and itll be more fun to drive.
ultimately the decision is up to you but i think that price is a bit high. just to give you an idea (not direct comparison), i bought my 2011 S4 premium plus for ~$27k with 48,000 miles.

You guys and your "priced too high"... lol... way to encourage the depreciation of the platform!
I think it's a relatively fair price. Give or take 2k is not going to break the bank or make a huge difference on a car payment...

I picked up a 2013 S4 Prestige with 23,000 miles with all the options, except adaptive cruise for $35,000. I had it shipped for $400 from Sacramento to Las Vegas. Private party sale, so I avoid the sales tax in Nevada.
