Looking to buy a B7 with higher mileage, what should I expect?

So I've owned a B8 that I had to get rid of, bought an mk4 GTI to hold me over but that was totaled in three months (not my fault, was rear ended). I had just changed the clutch and timing belt myself on the GTI and only put about 4,000 miles on it, I loved that car and am very sad it's gone, it was going to be my DD for the next 5-7 years, but oh well. I'm mechanically inclined and aside from opening up the trans or rebuilding the motor, I'm comfortable with most repairs.

So now I'm looking at Quattro cars again because let's face it FWD sucks. I don't want an auto and definitely don't want a v6, turbo cars only. That combination is very hard to find, however.

This one on Craigslist is super clean inside and out, in mint condition according to the ad, is an 06 2.0T Quattro 6spd, with all the options but 142k on the clock. I understand timing belt and clutch might need changing depending on when they were last done, but what other B7/2.0T specific maintenance should I be looking forward to in the future? I've read a lot about cam followers, but they don't seem too difficult.

Also, th asking price is $6k, which seems to be pretty fair considering the other cars out there. I'm located in SoCal, does this price seem fair or should I hold off for something lower mileage?
    Thanks in advance!

Rear coolant flange tends to go(pita to change but only $20-40 in parts)

Vacuum pump has been updated so if you have the old one and you're losing oil, it could potentially be explained by that. Changing both the vacuum pump and rear coolant flange(if both are needed) at the same time would be a good idea since they're next to each other.

Diverter valve tends to fail if you have the diaphragm style one. Upgrade to the 710D revision or just get a GFB Diverter Valve+ (car seems to be more responsive with the dv+)

Wear and tear items-Control arm bushings, motor mounts(check by seeing if they've leaked)

Everything I've listed so far can be DIY though

Thank you, I definitely expected the suspension items and plan on replacing the DV and putting an intake on it as well. The motor mounts are hydraulic? Or fluid filled or something?

Appreciate the pointing in the right directions!

Yes they are liquid filled, if replacing look into the 034 Street Density mounts.

Check to see if a carbon cleaning has been done, at 142 it's def past due.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I'm still a little hesitant on buying such a high mileage euro car, but the price is definitely right and repairs will come with any car.

So they're not belt driven cams anymore huh? And all that needs replacing is the tensioner, not the actual chain itself or any idler gear or anything?

The 2.0 FSI has a timing belt that drives the exhaust camshaft from the crank. There is also a timing chain at the rear of the head that drives the intake camshaft from the exhaust camshaft. It is this chain (and accompanying tensioner) that swaggerwagon was talking about.

Thanks for the clarification, I'll take this info and do a bit more research on things. Good to know these motors can last over 200k without too many problems.

Carbon clean should be on the cards with those miles if it hasn't been done already.

I have 150k. Previous owner replaced cam, HPFP, follower before I bought it, around 80k. I've put 70k on my car and the only MAJOR maintenance item i've had go out is my AC.

My control arm bushings are cracked but I can deal with it. I've replaced normal wear and tear parts (N80, N205, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, coil packs, etc)

This weekend I plan on changing my oil filter housing/ oil cooler gasket.

Biggest concern is: Running the right oil in the FSI (5w-40 Synthetic) and changing at interval (around 5k) and using a good filter. Most cam chain tensioner and N205 issues are due to the wrong oil spec, or wrong oil intervals. The FSI tears up oil fairly fast, I wouldnt go more than 5-6k on an oil change. Now my GTI, I would go 10k just fine.

PS: My car would only burn maybe 1/2 qt every 5k miles. These are reliable cars.
