Anyone consider the BMW M2 instead of the B9

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2010 S4 with the usual APR mods (Stage 2) and was planning my next purchase. Not a huge fan of the new B9 and was reading some good press on the BMW M2. The M2 offers a manual transmission and seems on par with a stock S4. Assume BMW tuners will be able to boost performance over stock HP/TQ. Think I also prefer the M2 layout a bit more than the S3, although I do like have 4 doors as opposed to two....... but I haven't driven either so my initial impressions could change after I take each for a ride.

Curious if any B8 owners have evaluated the M2 and what your thoughts were..

Yeah if you don't mind the driver's seat installed on an angle, I prefer seats looking straight out not angled toward the headlight.

yeah i'm absolutely considering it. I don't have much to add but yes absolutely it has my attention. Haven't driven it so I really don't know what to expect - not a big bimmer guy but it wouldn't be my first rodeo w. a 3ish series.

I'm pretty big on four doors and a back seat with enough room to comfortably transport adults so I suspect it will fade from my radar quickly but i'm going to check it out.

Yep. I'm planning on getting an STI on my next car just to save up money and then eventually picking up an m2 or even a Cayman GTS as a weekend car. I was thinking STI because it's got low maintenance costs and would still be fun to drive daily. As said before though, the M2 is a completely different car from the S4. Hell even the m3 and m4 are very different from the S4/5. Best car to compare to the S4 would be a 335ix or 340ix.

Was considering one. As a current B8.5 S5 owner, sat in a beautiful blue one in the N.Y. Auto show. The interior was spartan with the carbon fiber trim shockingly dull and cheap looking. Nothing nice of the interior stood out. The outside was sweet looking however. And as bimmer guys say, you'll love sitting in an Audi, but love driving a BMW. As an S5 owner, why not a beautiful exterior, interior and sweet driving ride. I'll pass on the M2.

The M2 looks like a fun little car, but I would probably step up to a CPO 911 C2S.

We have a rear-facing infant (and the possibility of one more), so the next move could be an M3.

The S3 is not an M2 competitor. Wait for the RS3 if you are considering an M2...The new TTRS, same motor as the new RS3 sedan, is 400 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque between 1,700 and 5,850 RPM. That plus AWD and a much nicer interior removed the M2 from my consideration quickly.

The new TTRS does 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds...that's R8 V10 quick. RS3 should be similar to that.

the M2 has the attention of every major auto enthusiast, imo, it's a smoking deal and likely going to be one of those cars that outshines the 'bigger brother's in BMW line up.

Can't really compare the b9 s4 vs the m2 because they are such completely different cars. Different drive train, and 2dr vs 4dr is going to be big enough differences to not be able to really compare on an apples to apples.

you could compare the s5 to the m2, but then again, the M2 is smaller, different drivetrain and will eat the s5 as light-breakfast.

certainly a cool car, very good bargain, but way too different from the s4 as the s4 has practicalities, where the M2 is going to be a fun two-seater.

BMW M's are comparable to Audi RS's. So in perspective, M2 should be compared to RS3.

M2 looks great. I have now seen 3 at different Cars and Coffees in the last few weeks. Beautiful cars. Not comparable to S4/S5 though. More comparable to a TT-S. Manual option is great. I saygo frive one for yourself and see. There are so many options these days it is mind boggling. We live in a great era for automobiles.

TTRS is much better looking IMO. Hopefully they offer body colored/black accents on the bottom diffuser and grille, I don't really care for the Alu accents.

    Edit: looks like they do.

TTRS over the M2 all day except for price. (I'm certain the TTRS is going to come in over 70k)

    B9 S4 would be a daily driver.

I would take an M over a S if I wanted strictly power. But I want handling power and interior. The BMW's fall well short when it comes to interior quality.

The M2 doesn't even have hydraulic steering so there goes the neighborhood.

I considered it, but wanted it as a dd year round for winter and a kid so S4 for me.

prior to getting my S4 I looked at the 135 and at that time the M version. This may be a small thing but it turns out to be a huge issue, visors. When I drive to work and home every day the sun comes right in the drivers side of the car. The visors, at that time, did not extend and were so short they provided zero sun blockage from my seating position. Car was a fun car to drive but there was no way I could deal with that every day, minus the winter months. Car came off the list for that reason and its small size. I really wanted the M version, looked so cool with the slightly widened fenders. The other issue was it was a limited vehicle and the dealers were throwing stupid markups on the M version.

    Things may have changed.

It's def not the same motor as M4. I'd say M2 is for fun and track, M4 is way faster in straight line.

TTRS = $70k. M2= $52K . That is a big difference to me. Although I am not currently in the market for a new car, if I were , I would seriously be considering an M2 over an B9 S4 which I will NEVER buy as long as there is no MT. I don't really need AWD, although I would prefer it. would actually consider an M235i with x drive although here again there is no 6MT, although the non x drive does have 6MT. My next car will probably be a newer used B8.5 S4 or S5.

I considered the M2. But after reviews I'm just not feeling the car. I'd want more straight line performance. I don't track and I just don't like the spartan interior of the M2 either.

I don't think I would really ever buy either of these cars to go fast in a straight line. :) To me, the one that is faster around the race track is the faster car.

But to the point, I like the M2 mostly because it reminds me of the E30 M3. It's small, light and fast. The new M4 is such a big car that it totally turns me off. Also, if I were in the market, I would be looking into an S3 to replace my S4.

According to the video posted above, the M2 is faster on the track. PLUS IT IS MORE FUN TO DRIVE! C&D said to save $14K and get the M2. Wish it came in more than 4 colors though. I could live with 3 of them.

TBH no, I still would keep the RS3 on the list - simply cause I plan it to be a DD and only car, so the M2 doesn't work
I don't think the B9 is staying on my list unless it's the S5, maybe A5 Sportback

that is very surprisingly. like if you bet me $40 that the S5 was smaller inside than the M2 you would be $40 richer.

i read that last night. seems like the m2 will not perform any better than a tuned m235i (engine-wise). terry burger is a brilliant dude and totally nerds out on the bimmer line of cars. if he says the m2 engine is pretty close to being topped out, it most likely is.

My warranty on my CPO 2011 runs out this summer and I've been thinking about my next car. While M2 really isn't on the list because of RWD it is an interesting thought. The price is really right and the rs3 or tt-Rs will be a lot $$ and would be my 1st choices if cheaper.

Even though the M2 and S4 (and S3) are different classes they competitive on price point and that's why people compare. If you don't have restrictions on #doors, AWD vs RWD then I can see cross shopping. What I really need is more $$ some can have a Jay Leno garage :D

The M2 may be a future classic with high resale value, especially with the manual. It's a beautiful compact sports car and way nicer than the 1 series it replaces.

M1 holds its value really well.

The M2 won't be in limited numbers like the 1M was. There were less than 750 for the US market IIRC.

They might hold their value better than other M cars, but it's really a huge tradeoff vs. the refinement and creature comforts the M3/4 has.

I'll likely find myself into a low mileage CPO M3 way before an M2. And I really wanted an M2, it's just not...M enough for me. Not that I'll ever squeeze out any sort of potential from these cars but the M2 is pretty canned and stripped. Totally badass in it's own right, but in about 6 months I'll be able to get an M3 with low miles for the same price and a shit load more M bits.
